Matt. xiii, 54. Mark vi, 1, 2. John v, 23-47.

'honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. Marvel not at this: for 10

the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my 15 judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

'If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the 20 truth. But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the 25 Father hath sent me. And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

‘And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye 30 have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. I receive not honour from men. But I know you, that ye have not the love of God

in you. I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another 35 shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

'Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed 40 Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

*And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. And when he was come into his own country, 2and when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the 45 synagogue, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From

Matt. xiii, 54-58; x, 1-14. Mark vi, 2-11. Luke ix, 1—5.

2whence hath this man these things? 'this wisdom, and these mighty works? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? 1is not this the carpenter's 5 son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? 2And they were offended at him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own 10 house. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief, 'and he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

"Then he called his twelve disciples together, 'and when he had called 15 unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease, and began to send them forth by two and two: and gave them power over unclean spirits, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. Now the names of the twelve 20 apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphæus, and Lebbæus, whose surname was Thaddeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. These twelve 25 Jesus sent forth, he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick, and commanded them, 'saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, 30 cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: but be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats: and he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, 35 neither bread, neither money, neither have two coats apiece, 'provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves; for the workman is worthy of his meat. And he said unto them, In what place soever enter into an house, 1and into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, ye inquire who in it is worthy; and whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide 'till ye depart from that place, and thence depart. 1And when ye come into an house, salute it. And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. 3 And whosoever will not receive 2nor hear you, 'nor hear your you, words, 2when ye depart thence, 'when ye depart out of that house or city, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a tes

3timony against them. "Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for 'the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

1Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for 5 they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; and ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.

'But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. 10 For it is not ye that speak, but the spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

1And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my 15 name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

'The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his Lord. 20 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?

1Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. What I tell you in 25 darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.

'And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them 30 shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

1Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me 35 before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

'Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they 40 of his own household.

'He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life 45 my sake shall find it.

'eth him that sent me. He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I 5 say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

And they went out, and they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where, and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

'And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence, to teach and to preach in their cities. 1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, 3now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him, and king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad :) 3and he was perplex- 15 ed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead. And he said 'unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets, others that one of the old prophets 20 was risen again. But when Herod heard thereof, he said, 'John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? It is John whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead. And he desired to see him.

2For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and 25 bound him, 'and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her. For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife. Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an 30 holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. But when Herod's birthday was kept, and when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and 35 chief estates of Galilee; and when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced 'before them, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. And he sware unto her 'with an oath, "Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of 40 my kingdom. And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, 'and she, being before instructed of her mother, said, "I will that thou give me 'here by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. And the king was ex- 45 ceeding sorry: 'nevertheless, for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him 'at meat, he would not reject her, 'he commanded

'it to be given her. And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: 'and he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and the damsel 'brought it, gave it to her mother. And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up 'the body, 5 2his corpse, and laid it in a tomb, 'and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

1When Jesus heard of it, the apostles, gathered themselves together unto Jesus, when they were returned, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest awhile: for there 10 were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. And after these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias, and they departed into a desert place by ship privately, 'he departed thence by 15 ship into a desert place apart. And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and when the people had heard thereof, and the people, when they knew it, followed him, 'a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, 20 and came together unto him. 'And Jesus went forth, and Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, 'a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he received them. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the passover, a feast of 25 the Jews, was nigh. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he began to teach them many things, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

And when the day began to wear away, and when the day was now 30 far spent, 'and when it was evening, then came the twelve, 'his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: 'send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and into the villages, and lodge, and buy themselves bread, 'victuals: for they have nothing to eat. 1But Jesus 35 answered and said unto them, 'They need not depart; give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? and this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, Two 40 hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, 'one of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so 45 many? and they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people. For they were
