John xi, 4-38.

*of God might be glorified thereby. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judæa again. His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone 5 thee; and goest thou thither again? Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend 10 Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: and many of the Jews came to 20 Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him : but Mary sat still in the house. Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. 25 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? She saith 30 unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. Now Jesus was not yet come into 35 the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, 40 Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, and said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. Jesus wept. Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! And some of them 45 said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? Jesus therefore again groan

*ing in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? 5 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, 10 Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, 15 and told them what things Jesus had done.

"Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. And one of them, named 20 Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; and not for that nation 25 only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

*And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any 35 man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem, 1and Jesus going up to Jerusalem, took unto him the twelve; and Jesus went before them and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve 'disciples apart in the way, and began 40 to tell them what things should happen unto him, saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished, and the Son of man 'shall be betrayed, 'shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to 45 the Gentiles 'to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him; for he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully

'entreated, and spitted on, and they shall mock him, and they shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him, and put him to death and the third day he shall rise again. And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.

'Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, 2James and John, the sons of Zebedee, 'worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you? They said unto him, Grant unto us that 10 we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, 'in thy kingdom, in thy glory. 'But Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask. 'Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, 'We can, 1we are able. And Jesus said unto them, 15 Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized but to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared 'of my Father. 2And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren, they 20 began to be much displeased with James and John. But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that 'the princes of the Gentiles, they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship, 'exercise dominion over them; and their great ones, 'they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among 25 you but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: and whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

And they came to Jericho: and it came to pass, that as he was 30 come nigh unto Jericho, 'as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. And as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, 'behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, blind Bartimæus, 3a certain blind man, the son of Timæus, sat by the highway side begging. And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant. And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passed by. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, 'when they heard that Jesus passed by, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me, 'have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. And the multitude and they which went before rebuked 'them, 40 because they should hold their peace, and many charged him that he should hold his peace: 'but they cried so much the more a great deal, 'Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood still, 'and called them, 2and commanded him to be called, to be brought unto him. And they 45 call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to

2Jesus. And when he was come near, he asked him, 'and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight, 'they say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee. So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched 5 their eyes and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him, glorifying God: and all the people when they saw it, gave praise unto God.

"And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

3And, behold, there was a man named Zacchæus, which was the chief 10 among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchæus, make haste, and come 15 down; for to day I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.

And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. And Zacchæus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; 20 and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, be- 25 cause he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.

He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy 30 till I come. But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by 35 trading. Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds. And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities. And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds. And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities. And another 40 came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: for I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, 45 taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow: wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming

not sow.

"I might have required mine own with usury? And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds. (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.) For say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him. 5 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.

And it came to pass, 'when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, when 10 he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

And 'now when Jesus was in Bethany, being in Bethany in the 15 house of Simon the leper, "there they made him a supper; and Martha served but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. Then as he sat at meat 'there came unto him a woman, 'Mary, 'having an alabaster box of a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, 'very precious and she brake the box, and poured it on his head, 1as he sat 20 at meat, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. 'But when his disciples saw it, there were some that had indignation within themselves, 'saying, To what purpose is this waste? 2why was this waste of the ointment made? For it might have been sold for more than 25 three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her. Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, 30 and bare what was put therein. When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? let her alone; why trouble ye her? 'for she hath wrought a good work upon me: 'against the day of my burying hath she kept this. For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good but me ye have 35 not always. She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this that this woman hath done, be told, be spoken of for a 40 memorial of her.

*Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to 45 death; because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.
