Inter-Scholastic Base Ball.

The Brooklyn team of 1898 was a thorough disappointment. The death of President Charles H. Byrne late last winter put matters in a chaotic condition, but Secretary Charles H. Ebbets secured control of the stock and a reorganization ensued with Mr. Ebbets as President; H. C. McLean, Vice President; A. W. Kiddle Secretary and Treasurer; Thomas Simpson, Assistant Secretary and Treas-1888.. Anson, Chicago urer. The new management immediately transferred its plant from Eastern Park to the new grounds at Fourth av. and Third st., and a season of prosperity was expected. The poor work of the team, together with the war, caused a lack of interest, which resulted in a loss of nearly $8,000. During the first few days of the championship, the team showed up well, but the absence of a regular short stop soon made itself felt and the team gradually fell behind. Jones first essayed to fill the position, but he soon gave way to La Chance, who was equally unsuccessful. Magoon was then secured and he filled the place acceptably, but weak batting overcame the improvement in fielding. In the meantime Manager Barnie was released and Captain Griffin appointed in his stead. The latter resigned after two days of service and President Ebbets took up the management of the team. It failed to prosper under his direction, finishing tenth, with a percentage of .372. In the 145 games played Brooklyn won 54 and lost 91. The team was shut out ten times, failing to administer a whitewash to any of its adversaries. The nearest the team came to achieving anything of the sort was in a game with Baltimore, which ended in neither side scoring after 11 innings. Brooklyn took part in twelve extra inning games, winning 6 and losing 6. It won 21 games by a single run and lost 20 by the same margin. The team also took part in 4 tie games. The team batting average was .260 and the team fielding, .945. The record of games and lost by the pitchers follows:

The New York Club officers are And. Freedman, President, and H. Bonnell, Sec., with headquarters at 142 Broadway and grounds at Eighth av. and 157th st. The season was also a disappointment, the losses being estimated at $40,000. The club finished seventh, winning 77 and losing 73 out of 150 games played. The team records were: Batting, .265; Fielding, .930. It administered 9 shutouts and was blanked 6 times by opponents. It won 6 and lost 2 extra inning games. It participated in 25 games, in which the verdict was secured by one run, winning 12 and losing 13. It took part in 7 tie games. The record of the pitchers follows:

The year 1898 proved the most spectacular AMATEUR-FLYING START-UNPACED-CONTINUED. Nearly year in the history of cycling. every record at every style of riding was lowered, while the paced figures were changed time and again until at the beginning of 1899 they stood far below where they were a year ago. The mile paced record was brought down from 1:35 2-5, made in 1897, to 1:32 3-5, made by Edouard Taylore at Willow Grove. The hour record went up from 32 miles 1086 yards, where Stocks held it, to 34 miles 1220 yards by H. D. Elkes, also at Willow Grove track, near Philadelphia.

The paced championship is as undecided as ever so far as figures go. Bald is acknowledged to be entitled to the honor, while Major Taylor, Floyd McFarlan1 and Owen Kimble follow him in the order named.

Locally the prospects are for a return of interclub and amateur sport. For the Eagle trophy three clubs entered the annual ten mile team club road race held on the Merrick, October 22. These were the Kings County Wheelmen, Pierce Wheelmen and the Indian Cycle Club. The Kings County won with 37 points, Pierce Wheelmen second, with 31 points; Indian Cycle Club third, with 7 points. The Eagle medal for the championship of Greater New York was won by Charies M. Ertz at Manhattan Beach.
