The champions of the Intercollegiate Association
for 1898 was the strong Johns Hopkins University Wallace L. Cremin, Capt.; Robt. Boyd, Mgr.
Team. The Crescents, however, defeated them and
also the team which Toronto University, of Toronto,
Canada, sent down to the States. The defeat of the
Canadians by the Brooklyn men gave the latter the
title of amateur champions of the United States and
Canada for 1898.

The record of the games played in 1898 by the prominent teams of the United States, together with the names of the captains and managers of the teams, follow:

Ice Hockey

The Amateur Hockey League of the Metropolitan District was organized last winter with five teams, among them the Brooklyn Skating Club team. The series required each team to play all four of the others two games each, one on the home ice and one at the rink of the opponents. Three rinks were used, the St. Nicholas and Ice Palace in New York and the Clermont in Brooklyn; and the championship matches drew big crowds to see the exciting play.

The championship for 1898 was won by the New York Athletic Club team after a tie and play-off with the St. Nicholas Skating Club. The Brooklyn team finished close behind the two leaders, there being only one game difference in the final summaries. The full standing of the League clubs at the end of the year, with the statistics of the series of championship matches, follow: Per Goals. cent. Made. Agt. .777

At Limerick the following week, in the South of Ireland championship tournament, he "divided" first in the handicap singles, was second in the handicap doubles and won first place and the challenge bowl in the scratch singles, giving him the championship of the South of Ireland. His trophy was the first foreign challenge cup ever brought to America by an American tennis player. At Leamington, in England, Paret reached the semi-finals in scratch singles, but was beaten by E. R. Allen, and at Birmingham he was beaten by E. V. Jones, one of the rising young English players. He got third in the mixed doubles at Birmingham.
