They are thus positively defrauded out} of an education by those who ought to be most interested in their wellfare. It is impossible for the very best of teachers to make their schools successful unless they have the support and encouragement of patrons. Our schools average very little if any more than half of those of school age. Whose fault is it? Certainly it is somebody's. These children ought to be in school instead of idleness and mischief. They will one day make the citizens that must rule the country for weal or woe. If

To Young Writers,

In the mass of articles we recieve from all parts of the country, it is reasonable to expect many peculiarly thinking authors. We receive notes from these, setting forth either their ex

pectations or merits. One writes briefly that he will be pleased to recieve renumeration for his articles by return mail, if possible. He is an agreeable party. His article quite frequently, would not be taken as a gift by the publisher of the cheapest sort of an almayou have good teachers, throw no ob- nac. Another writes that he is willing stacles in their way, but trust the man-to send us one or more columns per agement and government of your week for so much a column, and proposchools to them. They will do it much better than you possibly could. If you have a poor teacher, give all the encouragement in your power; it will make your school the better. And finally, trust this important work to the judgement and care of competent officers and teachers. They will have but little difficulty in governing your schools if it is left to them.

a humorist of no common order. He
has not printed anything, but he stands
ready to scratch off any amount want-
ed at brief notice. A letter received as
we write, is from a lady, who finds she

HOW TO MAKE MISCHIEF.-Keep your eye on your neighbors. Take care of them. Do not let them stir without watching. They may do something wrong if you do. To be sure you never knew them to do any thing very bad, themselves of the idea that a newspabut it may be on your account they per is a literary junk shop-open to the have not. Then do not relax in your efforts to keep them where they ought to be. Never mind your own business-that will take care of itself. If you find any symptoms of any one passing out of the path of duty, tell every one else what you see, and be particular to see a great many. It is a good way to circulate such things, though it may not benefit yourself, or any one particularly. Do keep something going-silence is a dreadful thing. It is said there was silence in heaven for the space of half an hour. Do not let any such thing occur on earth. It would be to much for this mundane sphere.

IN teaching reading it is not the time spent on the exercises, or the number of selections read, that tells most on the progress of pupils in becoming good readers. It is doing a little well that proves most advantageous. We are often tempted to assert that, if a child does not learn to read with expression in the first book of reading lessons, he will never become one, only after a great struggle to correct his bad or careless habits. When primary teachers are obliged to read for their pupils, it is well for them to exaggerate the emphasis, and the child, in attempting to imitate will probably strike the right key.
