APPLETONS'

COLLECTION OF FOREIGN AUTHORS.

VOLUMES ALREADY PUBLISHED:

I. SAMUEL BROHL AND COMPANY. A Novel. From the French of VICTOR CHERBULIEZ. 1 vol., 16mo. Paper cover, 60 cents; cloth, $1.00.

"Cherbuliez's Samuel Brohl and Company,' as a work of artistic character, may be considered one of his cleverest conceptions. We must declare the first of the collection of foreign authors to be quite a success."-New York Times.

II. GERARD'S MARRIAGE. From the French of ANDRÉ THEURIET. Paper cover, 50 cents; cloth, 75 cents.

"About the whole there plays a poetic light that is not the less charming because it is so wholly French."-New York World.

III. SPIRITE. A Fantasy. From the French of THEOPHILE GAUTIER. Paper cover, 50 cents; cloth, 75 cents.

"One of the most remarkable books that we ever remember to have read. . . . An exquisite prose poem, as glowing and pure as Keats's Eve of St. Agnes."-New York Express. IV. THE TOWER OF PERCEMONT. From the French of GEORGE SAND

Paper cover, 50 cents; cloth, 75 cents.

"The grace inseparable from George Sand's writings marks the work throughout."-New York World.

V. META HOLDENIS. A Novel.

Paper cover, 50 cents; cloth, 75 cents.

From the French of VICTOR CHERBULIEZ.

"Meta Holdenis' is altogether admirable, both in itself and as an example of the high art of narration."-Evening Post.

VI. ROMANCES OF THE EAST. From the French of COMTE DE GOBINEAU. Paper cover, 60 cents; cloth, $1.00.

"The writer, who is still in the diplomatic service of France, was at one time minister at Teheran, and in one of the stories here collected has given us a singularly vivacious and faithful sketch of Persian manners. As studies in local color these stories will be prized, yet they have considerable literary merit. Here and there, as in the Persian tale called the 'History of Gambèr-Aly,' there are gleams of veritable humor. There is at all times a briskness in these narratives, which in one instance is wrought up to dramatic intensity."-New York Sun.

VII. RENEE AND FRANZ (Le Bleuet). From the French of GUSTAVE HALLER. Paper cover, 50 cents; cloth, 75 cents.

"I believe, in spite of the pseudonym, that this charming book is the work of a woman. Here are refinements of sentiment and of analytical research which seem to me to belong to a mind more penetrating and also more circumscribed than that of a man. The author is well versed in the study of the most opposite characters, and all the types given stand out in bold relief. The plot seems to be excellent, artistic, and not overdrawn. The public will be sure to encourage this remarkable effort of an exceedingly refined man or of a very powerfully-gifted woman."-George Sand.

STUDIES

IN THE

CREATIVE WEEK.

BY REV. GEORGE D. BOARDMAN, D. D.

1 vol., 12mo. Cloth, $1.25.

THE LECTURES, FOURTEEN IN NUMBER, EMBRACE THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:

1. INTRODUCTION.

2. GENESIS OF THE UNIVERSE.

3. OF ORDER.

4. OF LIGHT.

5. OF THE SKY.

6. OF THE LANDS.

7. OF PLANTS.

8. OF THE LUMINARIES.

9. OF ANIMALS.

10. OF MAN.

11. OF EDEN.

12. OF WOMEN.

13. OF THE SABBATH.

14. RÉSUMÉ AND CONCLUSION.

"We see in the Lectures more than the sensation of the hour. They will have a marked effect in defining the position of the believer of to-day, in certifying both to disciple and to skeptic just what is to be held against all attack; and the statement of the case will be in many cases the strongest argument. They will tend to broaden the minds of believers, and to lift them above the letter to the plane of the spirit. They will show that truth and religion are capable of being defended without violence, without denunciation, without misrepresentation, without the impugning of motives." -National Baptist.

"Revelation and Science cannot really conflict, because 'truth cannot be contrary to truth;' but so persistent have been the attacks of men, who, looking to pure science for the solution of every problem, incline to the nihilism of the present century, on time-honored orthodoxy, that the believer in Revelation has long demanded an authoritative work on the first chapter of Genesis. In response to this wide-spread feeling, the Rev. George Dana Boardman, D. D., the learned pastor of the First Baptist Church, Philadelphia, was recently requested to deliver a course of lectures covering this debatable ground."

A HISTORY OF FURNITURE. Translated from the French of ALBERT JACQUEMART, author of "History of Ceramic Art," etc., etc. Edited by Mrs. BURY PALLISER. 170 Illustrations. 8vo, cloth, extra, gilt top, $10.

**The English word "furniture" hardly expresses the meaning of the French "mobilier,” the former being in ordinary usage restricted to household goods, while the latter is applicable to every article of domestic wility or luxury as well as to objects of personal adornment. In this wider sense it is applied in M. Jacquemart's book, and the reader will find in it the history not only of furniture proper, as buhl and marqueterie-work, etc., but also of embroideries, tissues, hangings, tapestry, statuary, terra-cottas, bronzes, genis, enan els, glassware, ivory carvings, etc. etc.; in short, of every species of work that meets the eye in collections like those of the Musée de Cluny at Paris, or the South Kensington Museum of London. THE ORIGIN OF NATIONS. In Two Parts. I. ON EARLY CIVILIZATIONS.

II. ON ETHNIC AFFINITIES. BY GEORGE RAWLINSON, author of "Monarchies of the Ancient World," 5 vols.; "Herodotus," 4 vols,, etc., etc. 1 vol, 12mo, with two Maps. Cloth, $1.50.

Prof. Rawlinson's previous studies entitle him to be regarded as an authority upon such subjects as this. The work is worthy of a wide reading."-Boston Journal.

The book is written with great clearness and, considering the real importance underlying the topics, with singular moderation."-N. Y. Times.

FINE EDITION OF A CLASSIC.

Lilustrated with nearly 2,000 Eugravings. 2 vols., 8vo. Cloth. 1878. $18.

This is the only complete work on the History of Pottery and Porcelain in Great Britain that has ever been published. The preparation of the work has extended over a period of many years, and has been done with the greatest care, no trouble having been spared to get at facts and to verify dates.
