several states and territories will be within easy reach of agricultural instruction. Extension work of this nature is being carried on in every state of the Union, either by agricultural schools, county agents, railroads, fertility companies or some other private business enterprise. In the Cotton Belt States and the states included in the north central part of the United States, the work, tho of comparatively recent date, has been pursued with so much vigor and attended by such success that these and Canada are the main sections to be considered. Since itinerant instruction here is carried on mainly by County Agents or District Representatives we shall be concerned principally with this phase of the

work.

EUROPE

In Europe where Agricultural Organization and Co

operation are further developed than any where else in the world, we find extension work in Agricultural Education- both practical and theoretical, in a correspondingly advanced stage. The extension work has revolutionized farming in Europe, especially in those countries of the western part, Belgium, France, Denmark, The Netherlands, The British Isles and Germany have been very successful in carrying on the work. The se Agricultural Extension systems have solved to a very great extent the many serious problems confronting their countries. Many years ago, it was possible for each of the several countries mentioned to produce nearly all the agricultural products necessary for home consumption and very little was imported. In time, however, it became necessary to import more and more food-stuffs and farm products, for the average yield per acre was gradually decreasing tho the population was steadily increasing. Had these conditions continued for many years, Europe would have become bankrupt. One element noticeably lacking was organization and cooperation among farmers. So rapid has been the advancement of organization in other branches or enterprises that to-day there is scarcely an industry or trade that
