Y., December 31, 1902 To the State Civil Service Commission: GENTLEMEN.-I have the honor to submit the following report of the examination division for the calendar year 1902. Organization of the division The only changes in the organization of the division during the year have been the resignation of Mabel E. Paterson and Rose J. Mehan as stenographers taking effect August 1st and November 4th, respectively. The vacancies have been filled by the appointment of Viola P. Sherrill and Ellen G. Tobin. During the greater part of the year it was found necessary to employ a temporary examiner at $75 a month. Franklin B. Holmes was employed in this capacity from January 13th to June 30th, and Nathan Beckwith from August 1st to October 31st. These appointments were made from the eligible list during the periods of especially heavy work incident to the examinations for the Kings county service and the general examination for clerks and stenographers and resulted in a considerable saving of time and expense as compared with the employment of outside examiners on a per diem basis. The expenses for special and expert examiners for the fiscal year ending September 30, 1902, was $1,120.94, which is slightly more than that reported last year, on account of the greater number of candidates examined.
