JOURNAL OF THE

FORTY-SECOND NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT

OF THE

GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC

1908.

The Forty-second National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic convened at the Valentine Theatre. in Toledo, Ohio, at 10 o'clock a. m., on September 3d, 1908, and was opened in due form.

The hall being in charge of Comrade D. J. Comly, officer of the day, and the following detail of guards: Comrades Jacob H. Storm, J. B. Whipple, N. W. Sassaman and N. J. Davis.

The Chaplain-in-Chief invoked divine blessing in these terms:

We thank Thee, O God, for the bright auspices under which we are gathered together today. We thank Thee for what we were able to ac complish of good during the dark days of our great Civil War. Our country was Thine, our cause was Thine, our battles were Thine, our victories were Thine, and all the glory was Thine. We thank Thee for all the measure of prosperity which has come to us during the past year in our beloved organization. We thank Thee for what our eyes saw and our ears heard yesterday, as our heroic comrades took up their line of march. Surely we should say, this is a day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad. We thank Thee for so many erect forms, keeping time as of old to the stirring music of the Union, with soldierly step; and we pray Thee for those who with bowed forms through the infirmities of years still are with us, whose hearts are still aflame, more than ever before, with love and loyalty. Bless all our comrades and their families who are in any way afflicted or distressed in mind, body, or estate. Bless Thy servant, the President of the United States and all in authority. Bless our army and navy and our National Guard. Bless our homes, our schools, our churches. Rule Thou Thyself in equity and justice in all our commercial and industrial dealings; and now, blessed Father, may Thy Holy Spirit be given us to guide us in all our deliberations, that no unfraternal feeling shall be experienced, no unfraternal act or word expressed, and may the best interests of our beloved organization thus be promoted.

And all our petitions we sum up in the prayer that we have been taught to make: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever, Amen.
