the same Jesus Christ; to whom, with Thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, now and for evermore. Amen 2.

SECTION IX.

OF GOOD WORKS.

THOUGH we are accounted righteous before God, only for the merit of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, by faith, and not for our own works or deservings ;' and 'albeit that good works, which are the fruits of faith, and follow after justification, cannot put away our sins, and endure the severity of God's judgment: yet are they pleasing and acceptable to God in Christ, and do spring out NECESSARILY of a true and lively faith; insomuch that by them a lively faith may be as evidently known, as a tree discerned by the fruit".'

It is, then, incumbent upon all them that are admitted into the fellowship of Christ's Religion, that they' should eschew those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same;' that they should deny all ungodliness and worldly lust, and live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world d;' not, however, trusting in,' such their own righteousness, but in' Christ's manifold and great mercies;' and ever remembering that, as it is the Spirit,' who enables them to think and to do such things as be rightful,' so they 'cannot do any thing that is

good without f' Him. For we have no power to do good works pleasant and acceptable to God without the grace of God by Christ preventing us, that we may have a good will, and working with us, when we have that good will. Nay, more; 'works done before the grace of Christ, and the inspiration of His Spirit, are not pleasant to God, forasmuch as they spring not of faith in Jesus Christ, neither do they make men meet to receive grace; yea rather, for that they are not done as God hath willed and commanded them to be done, no doubt but they have the nature of sin h.'

It is God alone, who can stir up the wills of his faithful people,' and increase in them more and more a lively faith and love, fruitful in all holy obedience. We should, therefore, pray, that His grace may always prevent and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works';' that we, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of Him be plenteously rewarded, through Jesus Christ our Lord m.'

O God, our refuge and strength, who art the author of all godliness; be ready, we beseech thee", to keep us from all sin and wickedness',' 'that by thy great goodness we may be governed and preserved evermore both in body and soul',' and through thy protection devoutly given to serve thee in good works, to the glory of thy name ".' PRAYER.

'O most mighty God, and merciful Father, who hast compassion upon all men, and hatest nothing that thou hast made, who wouldest not the death of a sinner, but that he should rather turn from his sin, and be saved ¶:' have mercy upon us, miserable offenders"," " Thy property is always to have mercy; to thee only it appertaineth to forgive sins $. 'Pour down upon us the abundance of thy mercy t' Mercifully forgive us our trespasses; receive and comfort us, who are grieved and weary with the burden of our sins ".' O Lord, deal not with us after our sins; neither reward us after our iniquities; but work in us true repentance, that iniquity may not be our ruin.' 'We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for our misdoings,' which, we acknowledge and bewail.' 'Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father.' Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults; restore thou them that are penitent; according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake,

forgive us all that is past";'' absolve thy people from their offences;'' and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord d'

‘O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.' Remember not, Lord, our offences, nor the offences of our fore-fathers; neither take thou vengeance of our sins; spare us, good Lord, spare thy people whom thou hast redeemed with thy most precious blood',' and enter not into judgment with thy servants, who are vile earth and miserable sinners .' Rather 'give us true repentance, forgive us all our sins, negligences and ignorances, and endue us with the grace of thy Holy Spirit, to amend our lives according to thy holy Word.'

virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those unspeakable joys, which thou hast prepared for them that love thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord". Grant,' not only that we may both ceive and know what things we ought to do,' but also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil the same; that we may in all things obey thy blessed will,' and always serve thee in pureness of living, and truth ".' And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we may shew forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives; by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days. Yet grant, that no conceit of any thing that is good in us, may withdraw our eyes from looking upon ourselves as sinful dust and ashes; but that ",' 'leaning only upon the hope of thy heavenly grace,' and remembering that we are accounted righteous before thee only for the merit of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, by faith, and not for our own works or deservings, we may press forward to the prize of the high calling that is before us, in faith and patience, humility and meekness, mortification and self-denial, charity, and constant perseverance unto the end: and all this for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ his sake; to whom with Thee and the Holy Ghost be all honour and glory, world without end.
