MR. KRUTTSCHNITT DISCUSSES
THE RAILWAY AS A PUBLIC
SERVANT

Here are a few extracts-and every agent, every employe of the Company, and every railway company, should read the paper in its entirety-from Mr. Kruttschnitt's article on "The Railway As a Public Servant" as published in a recent issue of Leslie's Weekly:

"It is evident that if the public is to get satisfactory results from its servant, the railway, it must take care that it be so treated that it will be kept in vigorous health. The railway cannot maintain vigorous health if it is not allowed sufficient earnings to sustain it in good physical and financial condition, or if burdens are imposed on it which are too heavy for it to bear. The immediate determination of what earnings it shall be permitted to receive and what burdens it shall have put on it is in the hands of the other servants of the public mentioned, chiefly the commissions and legislatures. If the railway is guilty of acts of omission or commission which are inconsistent with its public duty, these other servants of the public should adequately restrain and punish it. But when the railway is doing its best to perform its duty it is obviously contrary to the interests of the public for it to be subjected to unnecessary restraints and penalties.

President Sproule has had reprinted the article by Mr. Kruttschnitt entitled "The Railway As a Public Servant," which appeared in Leslie's Weekly of August 7, 1913, and the Southern Pacific is sending to all agents a copy of the article. This is so important and concise a contribution to the literature of the Company's business that every agent will be very much interested in it. OPERATION OF NEW SUNSET
LIMITED BEGINS SUNDAY
NOVEMBER 23RD

The operation of the new Sunset Limited, which was delayed owing to strike conditions east of El Paso, will be instituted on Sunday, November 23d.

The train, with a de luxe equipment, will leave San Francisco for New Orleans at 5:00 p. m. from the Third and Townsend Depot. It will arrive at Los Angeles at 7:45 a. m., leave there at 8:15 a. m. (a half-hour stop-over is allowed); arrive at El Paso at 8:30 a. m., leave at 9:45 a. m.; arrive at San Antonio at 3:53 a. m., leave at 4:00 a.m.; arrive at Houston at 10:03 a.m., leave there at 10:10 a. m., and arrive at New Orleans at 8:50 p. m., the third day out of San Francisco.

It has been decided to discontinue standard sleeping car service between It will leave New Orleans at 11:00 San Francisco and St. Louis via the a. m., reach Houston at 10:00 p. m.; Southern Pacific in connection with the arrive San Antonio at 4:20 a. m., leave Denver & Rio Grande and Missouri San Antonio at 4:30 a. m.; arrive El Pacific. The last car left St Louis on Paso at 10:15 a. m.; arrive Los AnNovember 9th, and the last car moved geles at 9:45 p. m.; leave Los Angeles east from Oakland Pier on November for San Francisco at 10:15, and arrive 11th. These cars operated in Pullman here at 1:00 p. m. line 3320 and were handled on Southern Pacific trains Nos. 5 and 6 between Oakland Pier and Ogden. This line will be operated temporarily until further notice between Oakland Pier and Ogden only on same trains.

The new Sunset Limited, while being a de luxe train, is not an extra fare train. But at the same time its equipment is palatial. It carries a dynamo mail and baggage car, a tourist sleeper, diner, 16-section standard sleepers, one compartment and observation car. Besides this, travelers patronizing the Sunset Limited are furnished with the daily stock quotations by special wire and also with a digest of the day's news.

It is electric lighted and its parlor, writing desk, telephone connection (without leaving the train) at New Orleans, San Francisco and Los Angeles, afford a service quite incomparable and in addition to all this the train cuts the time between San Francisco from four days to three days, making a 24-hour time reduction between Los Angeles and
