JÉSUS-CHRIST

INSTITUANT SAINT PIERRE CHEF DE L'ÉGLISE.

Cette composition présente la réunion de deux scènes qui ne se passèrent pas dans le même moment. L'une, arrivée avant la passion de Jésus-Christ, est rapportée dans l'Évangile de saint Mathieu, où il est écrit : « Et moi je vous dis que vous êtes Pierre, que sur cette pierre je bâtirai mon église, et que les portes de l'enfer ne prévaudront point contre elle. Je vous donnerai les clefs du royaume des cieux; tout ce que vous lierez sur la terre sera lié dans le ciel; et tout ce que vous délierez sur la terre sera délié dans le ciel. »

L'autre scène n'eut lieu qu'après la résurrection de JésusChrist: il apparut alors à ses apôtres auprès du lac de Tybériade, et leur dit : «N'avez-vous rien à manger? Ils lui répondirent que non. Jettez, dit-il, votre filet du côté droit de la barque et vous trouverez du poisson. Ils le jetèrent en effet, et ils ne pouvaient plus tirer leur filet tant il était chargé de poissons. > Jésus leur dit ensuite : Venez dîner, et il demande à SimonPierre : « Simon, fils de Jean, m'aimez-vous plus que ceux-ci ? Oui, Seigneur, vous savez que je vous aime. Et Jésus lui dit : Paissez mes agneaux. »

Raphaël, en réunissant ces deux scènes, a représenté JésusChrist glorieux et portant les traces de son crucifiement. Il est fâcheux que la plupart des apôtres aient la tête de profil, ce qui ne permet pas de donner aux figures des expressions aussi nobles et aussi bien caractérisées.

Ce tableau est le troisième de la suite des cartons d'Hampton Court.

CHRIST'S CHARGE TO PETER.

This composition offers the combination of two scenes which did not take place at the same moment. The one that happened previous to the Passion of our Saviour, is related in the Gospel of St. Matthew, where it is written: « And I say also unto thee that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven : and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. »

The other scene did not take place till after Christ's resurrection, when he appeared to his apostles near the sea of Tiberias and he said unto them: «Have ye any meat? They answered him, No. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. Subsequently Jesus said unto them: « Come and dine. And when they had dined, he said to Simon Peter: « Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, yea Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. »

In uniting these two scenes, Raphael has represented Jesus Christ incircled with a glory and bearing the marks of his crucifixion. It is to regretted that the greater part of the Apostles have their heads drawn in profile, which does not allow giving the figures such grand and well characterized expressions. This picture is the third in the series of Cartoons at Hampton Court.
