"The winds and the waves of the ocean,

They rested quietly;

But I heard on the gale a sound of wail,
And tears came to mine eye."

"And sawest thou on the turrets
The king and his royal bride,
And the wave of their crimson mantles,
And the golden crown of pride?

"Led they not forth, in rapture,
A beauteous maiden there,
Resplendent as the morning sun,
Beaming with golden hair?"

"Well saw I the ancient parents,
Without the crown of pride;

They were moving slow, in weeds of woe;
No maiden was by their side!"

Longfellow.

UHLAND.

THE SAILOR RETURNED TO HIS FAMILY.

MUCH would it please you sometimes to explore
The peaceful dwellings of our borough poor;
To view a sailor just returned from sea,
His wife beside; a child on either knee,

THE MARINER.

And others crowding near, that none may lose
The smallest portion of the welcome news;
What dangers passed, "when seas ran mountains
high,

When tempests raved, and horrors veiled the sky;
When prudence failed, when courage grew dis-

mayed,

When the strong fainted, and the wicked prayed;
Then in the yawning gulf far down we drove,
And gazed upon the billowy mount above;
Till up that mountain, swinging with the gale,
We viewed the horrors of the watery vale."
The trembling children look with steadfast eyes,
And, panting, sob involuntary sighs;

Soft sleep awhile his torpid touch delays,
And all is joy, and piety, and praise.

CRABBE.

THE MARINER.

RUDDERLESS, my shattered bark,
Driven by wild fatality,

Hurries through the tempest dark,

O'er the immeasurable sea.

Yet one star the clouds shines through;
Little star, shine on, I pray!
O that star is vanished too-
My last anchor breaks away.

Gloomy mists the horizon bound,
Furiously the waters roar,

Frightful gulfs are yawning round,
Fearful crags along the shore:
Then I cried, in wild despair,
"Earth and heaven abandon me."
Fool! the heavenly pilot there
May thy silent helmsman be.

Through the dark, the maddened waves,
O'er the dangerous craggy bed,
Midst the night-enveloped graves,

Lo! I was in safety led,

By the unseen guardian hand;—
Darkness gone, and calm the air,
And I stood on Eden's land;
Three sweet angels hailed me there!

Everlasting fount of love!

Now will I confide in Thee:

Kneeling, 'midst the joys above,

Thy resplendent face I see :

Who can paint thee, fair and bright,

Thy soul-gladdening beauty tell,

'Midst heaven's music and heaven's light, Purity ineffable?

O, unutterable joy!

In Thy light to breathe, to be;

INVITATION TO SEAMEN.

Strength, and heart, and soul employ,
O my God, in loving Thee.

Though my path were dark and drear,
Holiest visions round me rise;

Stars of hope are smiling there,
Smiling down from Paradise.

ZHUKOOSKY.

INVITATION TO SEAMEN.

"THOU rulest the raging of the sea; when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them." -(Ps. lxxxix. 9.)

WHY, Seamen, should you idly gaze,
While others seek the house of praise?
Should worldly speech, or foolish jest
Employ the sacred day of rest?

Have Landmen better right to try
To reach the port of peace on high?
Or greater cause to dread wrath's storm-
The quenchless flame, the deathless worm?

What though not rigg'd in fine attire-
Would purple save from endless fire?
Will He that every heart unveils,
Condemn the hull for tattered sails?

What words employed the latest breath
Of many doomed to shameful death;

But that the error of their way
Began with breach of Sabbath-day?

Come, Seamen, come and taste the rest
Enjoyed by JESUS and the blest;
In holiness His Sabbath spend,
And blessings will your toils attend.

Seamen, astern no longer lag,

But bear up for the BETHEL FLAG:
Come, learn how He that rules the wave
Endured the cross your souls to save.

THE MARINER'S THANKSGIVING PSALM, BEING THE CVII., VERSE 23.

THEY that toil upon the deep,

And in vessels light and frail

O'er the mighty waters sweep,

With the billow and the gale,

Mark what wonders God performs,
When He speaks, and, unconfined,

Rush to battle all His storms

In the chariots of the wind.

Up to heaven their bark is whirled
On the mountain of the wave;
