CURRENT HISTORY

England has a new hero. The name of Baden-Powell is now on the lips of every Englishman. The fertility of resources which he displayed during the long siege of Mafeking by the Boers and the plucky spirit which he infused into his little garrison have won a well-deserved recognition.

The Relief of
Mafeking.

The first attack on Mafeking was made by the Boers under General Cronje, October 15, 1899, Colonel BadenPowell repulsed the attack, and the Boers were sufficiently impressed by the strength of the English to determine upon a waiting game. They therefore laid siege to the town, and began a series of almost daily bombardments.

Colonel Baden-Powell did not at first wait idly in his trenches for the enemy. Several times he made sorties, at first with success, but later with losses large enough to convince him of the futility of that course. Instead of confining his defences to the immediate limits of the town, he pushed his lines well forward, a plan which made the territory subject to bombardment so large that the heavy shell fire of the Boers did comparatively little damage.

In December Colonel Plumer came southward from Rhodesia with a force of about two thousand men for the relief of the town. Repulsed once by the Boers, he persisted on his course, and on March 16 got within fourteen miles of Mafeking, but was beaten back.

The bombardment continued. General Roberts meanwhile sent word that a relief force would arrive from the south on May 18, and the garrison made assurance of its ability to hold out until June.

The relief column under Colonel Mahon set out on May 4 from Barkly West. It is supposed to have included about 2,300 men, consisting of four battalions of Imperial Yeomanry, Imperial Light Horse, the Diamond Fields Horse and Artillery, and the Kimberley Light Horse. Colonel Mahon covered twenty-five miles daily. On May 7 he occupied Taungs, and a day or two later made a detour to
