ness and resiliency that yields a sense of comfort and ease to the wearer hardly attainable by any other make of footwear. The lamb's wool, being robbed first of all animal oil it might contain, is a non-conductor of heat, and therefore guarantees the wearer warm feet at all times. The Dr. Reed Cushion Shoe, by conforming to each and every curve of the feet, and distributing the weight of the body evenly, admits of free blood circulation and prevents friction at any one point. The inner sole is damp proof, and so acts as a preventative to any sequelae to wet feet, e.g., rheumatism, neuralgia, etc. In fact, this make of shoe enables the wearer to walk greater distances with less expenditure of nerve force than with any other shoe obtainable.

For the successful treatment of many affections of the pedal extremities, physicians should bear in mind always the character of shoe worn, as sanitary footwear is of the greatest importance in the relief of many distressing and painful conditions.

FELLOWS' SYRUP OF HYPOPHOSPHITES.

Ir has sustained a high reputation in America and Europe for efficiency in the treatment of nervous disorders, as the following letters will show:

Charles A. L. Reed, M.D., Cincinnati, Ohio: "Your excellent preparation of the Hypophosphites has not only been a long-standing favorite with me in my private practice, but is almost a routine prescription of mine for patients at the Cincinnati Free Hospital for Women when convalescing from abdominal and other operations."

Henry O. Marcy, A.M., M.D., 180 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, Mass.: "I have long employed phosphorus in various forms with much confidence, and considering your preparataion very valuable as uniting in one compound the other essential tonics, I have used it in many cases where a nervine tonic was indicated."

From Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing, Professor of Nervous Diseases at the Royal University of Vienna, Austria: "Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing desires to state that he has used Fellows' Syrup of Hypophosphites for a number of years, and that he has obtained very good results from this tonic, especially in neurasthenia and in conditions of mental exhaustion."

Dr. Milner Fothergill wrote: "The combination (Fellows' Hypophosphites) is an excellent one, the best yet made to my knowledge. It is a happy thought. It is a good, all-round tonic, specially indicated when there is nervous exhaustion. It is readily digestible, and has given much satisfaction in my experience of it."

Lawson Tait, Esq., F.R.C.S. Eng. and Edin., M.S.S. Ireland and Obs. S. Dub., Berlin, Surg., Brm. and Med. Hosp. for Women, Cons. Surg. W. Bromwich, Hosp., writes: "I have found Fellows' Syrup of Hypophosphites very useful in the special diseases of women, where anemia is the leading symptom."

John Milton Biglow, M.D., Professor Therapeutics, Albany Medical College, Albany, N.Y.: "I have used and prescribed Fellows' Hypophosphites during the past fifteen years frequently. This preparation has seemed to answer a better purpose in promoting constructive metamorphosis, and in arresting the progress of phthisical complaints, than any other with which I am acquainted."

OR TWENTY YEARS this treatment has resulted in quick cures without complications. It insures strengthening repose while being used.

Bacteriolog cal tests by C. J. Bartlett, M.D., of the Pathological Department of Yale University, show that vaporized Cresolene kills the germ of diphtheria. Its action is curative and prophylactic and hastens convalescence in this disease.

Cresolene is germicidal and sedative in its action on the mucous membrane. The air rendered antiseptic enters where liquid from sprays or nebulizers cannot. A 1% solution of Cresolene in water kills the germs of diphtheria, typhoid fever and pus in one minute.

The diseases in which the properties of Vapo-Cresclene have been especially utilized are whooping cough, croup, bronchitis, influ. nza, hay fever, diphtheria, the bronchial complications incident to measles and scarlet fever, and in allaying the dyspnoea and irritating cough in pneu

THE INFLUENCE OF PEPTO-MANGAN (GUDE) UPON THE BLOOD AND NERVOUS SYSTEM. (ABSTRACT.)

BY L. BRAUN, M.D., AND B. LICHT, M.D., VIENNA, AUSTRIA.

As a contribution to the already considerable literature on modern iron therapy a few cases of affections of the blood and nervous system are communicated here in which Pepto-Mangan (Gude) has been employed. The results in a series of cases in which Pepto-Mangan (Gude) was replaced by another chalybeate after a certain time for the purpose of comparison during an equivalent period or for other reasons will be reserved for another report.

Among the above two groups of twenty-eight cases, two of each are described in detail, and twenty-four tabulated. In every instance a rapid increase in the number of red blood corpuscles and in the percentage of hemoglobin was noticed. Physical examination also revealed this condition in a comparatively short time after the administration of the remedy. In connection with the change in the hematological picture there was a material improvement of the subjective disorders until their complete subsidence.

In children up to twelve years of age the preparation was administered in doses of one teaspoonful (5.0 gm.), twice daily, but always diluted with water, etc. Adults received one tablespoonful or more (10.0 to 15.0 gm.), twice or three times daily, before or during meals. As in all diseases attended with general weakness, we regulated the diet and ordered the patient to be out in the open air, and as far as it was practicable an invigorating regimen was enjoined, paying special attention in this respect to the experience of authorities in this field. In view of the fact that the majority of patients during the treatment with Pepto-Mangan (Guide) were compelled for financial reasons to pursue their usually laborious and exhausting work, and therefore were not able, or only at times, to follow the dietetic directions, the considerable improvement in the general condition during the period of treatment, as well as the objective findings, must be solely attributed to the efficacy of this chalybeate. It is known that a simple invigorating diet in anemic and chlorotic persons is incapable of restoring the blood to a normal state, or of increasing the strength above a certain level within a given period of time. It is only at the beginning of such a regimen that an increase of the percentage of hemoglobin can be noticed, which, however, is very dilatory in appearing; and after the improvement of the subjective and physical condition of the patient, which naturally takes place in weakly and ill-nourished persons under a regulated and nutritious diet, a pause only too soon occurs, and then the old disturbances return. A complete and permanent cure can be obtained only if besides the dietetic treatment, which, it is true, is not to be under-estimated, recourse is had to the systematic use of Pepto-Magnan. As will be seen from the following reports the administration of no other chalybeate will lead to such pronounced and lasting results, and this is attributable to its advantageous composition.

The majority of ferruginous preparations do not conform to the main requirement of chalybeate therapy, a neutral reaction, and also are wanting in manganese, that most important therapeutic agent. The presence of
