PREFACE.

THE "Apostolical Harmony of the Gospels"* contained the result of Dr. Carpenter's investigations, pursued for more than thirty years. The general principles on which it is founded have met with much concurrence, and have been followed in several scriptural works, especially in New England. It has been also prized by many, who passed no opinion as to its chronology. Whilst they felt little solicitude, and less competence, to decide as to the proper order of Parts and Sections, they desired a connected view of our Saviour's ministry, which should bring before them all that the Evangelists have written, faithfully translated, and carefully collated, for the purposes of comparison and in these respects it is perhaps not surpassed.

The Harmony has been used, not only in the closet, but by Teachers with their Bible Classes, by Parents in family worship, and by Ministers as the groundwork of pulpit expositions. Yet whilst the reader may have qualified himself by previous preparation to combine the different gospels, the hearer, with the Harmony in his hands, may not be able
