ST. LUKE, CHAP. VII. VER. 1. What is a miracle?

A. A wonderful work, beyond the power of man to perform.

What did Christ prove by working miracles?

A. He proved that he acted by authority from God, who alone could alter the course of nature.

What is the first miracle mentioned?

Where is it written?
Into what place did Christ

ST. LUKE, CHAP. VII. VER. 1. Christ healeth the Centurion's Servant.

Now when he had ended all his ayings in the audience of the people, he en

enter when he had ended

his sayings?

In whose audience had he spoken them?

What do you mean by "audience?" A. Hearing. What was Capernaum ? A. A town of Galilee. Whose servant was sick there?

What was a centurion?

A. A Roman officer who had the command of a hundred soldiers.

How severe was the servant's sickness?

What did the centurion do, when he heard of Jesus? Who were the elders ? A. Principal or chief men. What did the elders do? What is here meant by "instantly?"

A. Earnestly.

What reason did they give why the centurion was worthy to receive this favour? What was a synagogue? A. A place of worship among the Jews.

What made it a particular act of kindness in the centurion to build a synagogue?

A. Because he was a Roman, and therefore not of their own country, Judea.

Did Jesus go with the elders?

What happened when he was now not far from the house?

tered into Capernaum. And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal. his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: for he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue. Then Jesus went with them.

And when he was now

not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to

What was the message the centurion sent by his friends?

What virtues did the centurion show by this speech?

1st. Faith, in believing Christ could heal by his word at a distance.

2d. Humility, in not thinking himself worthy that Christ should enter under his roof.

What did he argue from his own authority?

A. That the authority of Christ must be much greater. What did Jesus do when he heard this speech?

What do you mean by "marvelled?" A. Wondered.

What did he say to the people?

Whom does he mean by "Israel ?"

A. The Israelites. What did those who were sent find, when they returned to the house?

What do you mean by "his being whole?"

A. That he was restored to health.

What is the miraculous part of this account?

4. Christ healing immediately by a word at a dis

tance.

ST. MARK i. 21. What are the next miracles mentioned ?

Where are they written?
Whom do you mean when

him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof; wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee, but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers; and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no not in Israel. And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

ST. MARK i. 21.

Christ healeth a man of an unclean Spirit, and Peter's Wife's Mother of a Fever. And they went into

you say they entered into Capernaum?

A. Jesus and his disciples. Where did they enter on the Sabbath-day?

What do we learn from this?

A. To attend the Church more especially on that day. Which was the Sabbathday among the Jews?

A. The last day of the week, Saturday.

Which is the Sabbath-day among Christians?

A. The first day of the week, Sunday.

Why was it changed? A. Because our Lord rose from the dead the first day of the week.

What did Christ do in the synagogue?

In what manner did he teach?

Who were the Scribes ? Who was in the synagogue?

What do you mean by 66 a man with an unclean spirit?"

A. Being possessed with a devil.

What did he cry out? What did the unclean spirit acknowledge Jesus to be?

A. The Holy One of God.

What did Jesus then say to the unclean spirit? What was the effect of these words?

pernaum and straightway on the Sabbath-day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. And they were astonished at his doctine; for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the Scribes. And there was in their synagogue, a man with an unclean spirit ; and he cried out, saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth; art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had

torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? What new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee. And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever; and anon

What do you mean by they tell him of her. And 66 ministered?"

A. Attended, waited on. What did her ministering unto them show?

A. That she was quite well.

What was the miraculous part of Christ's healing Simon's wife's mother?

A. His doing it immediately, in an instant, and without the use of natural means.

ST. LUKE V. 1.

What is the next miracle related?

Where is it written?
Where was Christ stand-

he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.
