Jesus Christ, whom having not seen, ye love.-1 Pet. i. 7, 8.

God is love and he that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God, and God in him. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casteth out fear, &c. He that feareth, is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother, whom he hath seen; how can he love God, whom he hath not seen? 1 John iv. 16. 18-20.

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, &c.-1 John v. 2.

SECT. III. As Fruits of Love to God and Christ: 1. To delight themselves in him, long for, and pant after him make their boast of, and glory and rejoice in God and Christ, as their Portion and Rest: and, 2. To obey, and hearken to him.

I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love, Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, &c.-Rev. ii. 4, 5.

I WILL not go up in the midst of thee, &c. When the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned, and, &c. My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. A he said unto him, If thy presence go not, carry us not up hence.-Exod. xxxiii. 3, 4. 14, 15.

Their rock is not as our rock, even our enemies themselves being judges. Deut. xxxii. 31.

I rejoice in thy salvation: there is none holy as the Lord, for there is none besides thee: neither is there any rock like our God, &c.-1 Sam. ii. 1, 2.

All the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.-1 Sam. vii. 2.

The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; the God of my rock, &c. my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, and my saviour. Who is God, save the Lord? And who is a rock, save our God?-2 Sam. xxii. 2, 3. 32. Ps. lxxi. 3.

I will sing praise to thy name, &c.Ps. ix. 2.

Why standest thou afar off, O Lord? Why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?-Ps. x. 1. lxxxviii. 14.

How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? How long wilt thou hide thy face from me?-Ps. xiii. 1. lxxiv. 9, 10.

The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance, and of my cup; thou maintainest my lot; the lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage, &c. In thy presence is fulness of joy: at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.-Ps. xvi. 5, 6. 11.

O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.-Ps. xix. 14.

We will rejoice in thy salvation: and in the name of our God we will set up our banners.-Ps. xx. 5.

The king shall joy in thy strength, O Lord and in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice?-Ps. xxi. 1.

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me? &c. Be not far from me, for trouble is near, &c. Be not thou far from me, O Lord, O my strength, &c.-Ps. xxii. 1. 11. 19. lxxxviii. 14, 15.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, &c. Thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.-Ps. xxiii. 1. 4.

his, &c. in his favour is life, &c. Lord, by thy favour, thou hast made my mountain to stand strong: thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.→→ Ps. xxx. 4, 5. 7.

The Lord is my light, and my salvation whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple, &c. My heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek. Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.-Ps. xxvii. 1. 4. 8. 9.

As the hart panteth after the waterbrooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? my tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me; for I had gone with the multitude, &c. to the house of God, &c. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? &c. Hope thou in God, &c.Ps. xlii. 1—5. 11.

Thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? Then will I go, &c. unto God my exceeding joy (or the gladness of my joy).Ps. xliii. 2. 4.

In God we boast all the day long. —Ps. xliv. 8.

thirsty land, &c. Hide not thy face from me.-Ps. cxliii. 6, 7.

The Lord my strength (or rock), &c. my goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, &c. Happy is that people whose God is the Lord.-Ps. cxliv. 1, 2. 15. cxlvi. 5.

Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is excellent (or exalted) his glory is above the earth and the heaven.-Ps. cxlviii. 13.

As the apple tree is among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved, &c. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.-Cant. ii. 3.

By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: but found him not I will rise now and go about the city, &c. I found him, I held him, and would not let him go, &c.-Cant. iii. 1, 2. 4.

I opened to my beloved, but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, &c. I am sick of love, &c. My beloved is white, &c. This is my beloved.-Cant. v. 6. 8. 10. 16. viii. 6, 7.

In the way of thy judgments have we waited for thee: the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee. With my soul have I desired thee in the night yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early.-Isa. xxiv. 8, 9.

In that day shall the Lord of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty unto the residue of his people.-Isa. xxviii. 5.

The Lord is our judge, the Lord is our law-giver, the Lord is our king; he will save us.-Isa. xxxiii. 22.

As for our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.-Isa. xlvii. 4.

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall be joyful in my God. Isa. lxi. 10.

which doth not profit. My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and have hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, &c. Have I been a barren wilderness unto Israel? &c. Can a maid forget her ornaments? a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number. - Jer. ii. 11. 13. 31, 32.

Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that

Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom; neither let the mighty man glory in his might, &c. But let him who glorieth, glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, &c.-Jer. ix. 23, 24. 2 Cor. x. 17. 1 Cor. i. 29. 31.

The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all things, &c. The Lord of hosts is his name.-Jer. x. 16. li. 19.

Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee, &c. So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him.-Gen, xii. 1. 4, 5. Heb. xi. 8.

So in putting away Ishmael and Hagar.-Gen. xxi. 11—14.

God said unto Abraham, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest; and offer him there for a burnt-offering, &c. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took Isaac, &c. He stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son, &c. In blessing, I will bless thee, &c. because thou hast obeyed my voice.-Gen. xxii. 1–3. 10. 17, 18.

In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.-Gen. xxvi. 4, 5.

God bid Moses go; and said, he would be with his mouth, &c. He refused: God was angry.-Exod. iv. 13, 14.

Thus did all the children of Israel: as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.-Exod. xii. 50.
