The name of the wicked shall rot, &c. The expectation of the wicked shall perish.-Prov. x. 7. 28. xi. 7.

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man: but the end thereof are the ways of death.-Prov. xiv. 12.

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, &c. so his thoughts are.-Prov. xv. 8. 26. xxi. 27. Isa. lxvi. 3, 4. Gen. iv. 3-7.

The woman whose heart is snares and nets, &c. the sinner shall be taken by her.-Eccles. vii. 26.


But it shall not be well with the wicked, &c. because he feareth not before God.-Eccles. viii. 13. Isa. iii. 11.

Woe unto them who draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin, as it were, with a cart-rope, &c.-Isa. v. 18, &c. Micah ii. 1-3.

No peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked. Isa.. xlviii. 22. lvii. 20.

Against whom do ye sport yourselves? &c. when thou cryest, Let thy companions deliver thee, &c.— Isa. lvii. 4. 13.


They shall look on the carcasses of men, who have transgressed against me; for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched, and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.-Isa. lxvi. 24. xxxiii. 14.

Every one shall die for his own iniquity.-Jer. xxxi. 30.

The soul that sinneth it shall die. -Ezek. xviii. 4. 20. iii. 19.

The axe is laid unto the root of the trees; therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down, and cast into the fire.-Matt. iii. 10. vii. 19.

The children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness, there shall be weeping, &c.-Matt. viii. 12. xxiv. 51.

Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up, &c. Both fall into the ditch.-Matt, xv. 13, 14.

Cast the unprofitable servant into outer darkness, there shall be weeping, &c. When the Son of man shall come, &c. then shall he say unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil, &c. for I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat, &c. Thinkest thou this, &c. that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? &c. Thou treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath, and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, &c. Indignation and wrath; tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man who doth evil, &c.Rom. ii. 3. 5. 8, 9.

Whosoever was not found in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire. Rev. xx. 15.

The fearful and unbelieving, and the abominable, &c. shall have their part in the lake which burneth with, fire and brimstone: which is the second death, &c. There shall in ng wise enter into the New Jerusalem, any thing that defileth or worketh abomination, or maketh a lie.-Rev. xxi, 8. 27.

FOURTHLY, Under what Case the Law concludes Men.

SECT. I. Under Sin and Guilt. Ir thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities; O Lord, who shall stand ?— Ps. cxxx. 3. Job ix. 1, 2.

Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one who accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.-John v. 45.

We have before proved (or charged) both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; as it is written, There is none righteous, &c. What things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped; and all the world may become guilty before God (or subject to the judgment of God), &c. There is no difference: for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.-Rom. iii. 9, 10. 19. 22, 23.

Where no law is, there is no transgression. Rom. iv. 15.

Until the law, sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed, when there is no law, &c. The law entered, that the offence might abound, &c.-Rom. v. 13. 20. Gal. iii. 19.

I had not known sin but by the law, &c. without the law, sin was dead. I was alive without the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died, &c. That sin might appear sin, &c. and by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.Rom. vii. 79. 13.

For God hath concluded them all (or shut them up together) in unbelief, &c.-Rom. xi. 32.

The strength of sin is the law. 1 Cor. xv. 56.

The scripture hath concluded all men under sin.-Gal. iii. 22. Rom. v. 12. Ps. cxliii. 2.

We know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; shewing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man; but for the lawless and disobedient: for the ungodly, &c. 1 Tim. i. 8-10.

Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all, &c.-James ii. 10.

SECT. 11. Under the Curse thereof. CURSED be he, who confirmeth not

When ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants, &c.-Luke xvii. 10.

The parable of such who trusted in themselves, that they were righteous, &c. Two men went up into the temple, &c. The publican went down to his house justified rather than the Pharisee, who boasted much of his doings. All these things have I kept from my youth; Christ said, Yet lackest thou one thing, &c.-Luke xviii. 9-14. 20-23. Matt. iii. 9.

There is one who accuseth you,

eyen Moses, in whom ye trust.-John v. 45.

-By him all who believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Acts xiii. 39.

By the deeds of the law, there shall no flesh be justified in his sight.Rom. iii. 20.

For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect. Because the law worketh wrath.-Rom. iv. 14, 15.

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died, &c. -Rom. v. 6. 10.

What the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, &c. Rom. viii. 3.

Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Where fore? because they sought it not by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law for they stumbled at that stumbling stone. Rom. ix. 31, 32.

Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. Rom. x. 4.

I know nothing by myself: yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.-1 Cor. iv. 4. The strength of sin is the law. 1 Cor. xv. 56.

A man is not justified by the works of the law, &c. For by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified, &c. If righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.-Gal. ii.

16. 21.

That no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident; for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith, but, The man who doeth them, shall live in them, &c. Wherefore then serveth the law? it was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come, &c. If there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law, &c. Wherefore the law was our school

By grace ye are saved, &c. not of works, lest any man should boast.— Eph. ii. 8, 9.

We are the circumcision which worship God in the Spirit, &c. and and have no confidence in the flesh, &c. Paul was very zealous of the law, and if any man had whereof to boast in that respect, he more; yet he counted all but loss and dung for Christ; and that he might be found in him, not having his own righteousness, which is of the law.-Phil. iii. 3, &c.

The law is good, if a man use it lawfully: knowing that the law is. not made for the righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, &c. 1 Tim. i. 8, 9.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he hath saved us.-Titus iii. 5.

If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, &c. what further need was there that another priest should rise? &c. For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did-Heb. vii. 11. 19. viii. 5, 6. 8.

In which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience.-Heb. ix. 9.

For the law, having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually, make the comers thereunto perfect: for then would they not have ceased to be offered, because that the worshippers once purged, should have had no more conscience of sins; but in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year; for it is not possible. that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins, &c. Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, &c
