LISTERINE OMES NEARER AN IDEAL ANTISEPTIC than any preparation ever presented to the M dical Wola

Listerine has withstood the comparative clinical tests of the many officinal drugs recently classed as antiseptics in the natural progress of me tical theories and laboratory observations, no one of which so happily combines the above qualities as this carefully prepared formula of Benzo-Boracic Acid with Vegetable Products and Ozoniferous Essences, all antiseptics and chemically compatible.

Send for new Formula Book and General Reports establishing its value externally in Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Leucorrhoea, Gonorrhoea and all Mucous Membrane Catarrhs; internally in Typhoid and other Fevers, Zymotic Diseases, Diphtheria, Scarlet Fever, Dyspepsia, Dysentery, Diarrhoea, and all forms of Cholera, and as a general Prophylactic.

FORMULA-Fach fluid drachm of "LITHIATED HYDRANGEA represents thirty grs. of FRESH Hydrangea, and three zrs. of CHEMICALLY PURF Benro-Salicy late of Ithia. Prepared by our improved process of osmosis, it is INVARIABLY of DEFINITE and UNIFORM therapeutic strength, and hence can be depended upon in clinical practice.

Kidney Alterative and Anti-Lithic.

Reliable, Uniform and Definite.

The solution and elimination of an excess of uric acid and urates is best attained by an intelligent combination of certain forms of Lithia and a Kidney Alterative.

The ascertained value of Hydrangea in Calculous Complaints and Abnormal Conditions of the Kidneys through the earlier reports of Drs. Atlee, Horsley, Monkur, Butler and others, and the well-known utility of Lithia in the diseases of the uric acid diathesis, at once justified the therapeutic claims of Lambert's Lithiated Hy drangea when first announced to the Medical Profession, and it is now regarded by Physi cians generally as the best and most soothing Kidney Alterative and Anti-lithic Agent yet known in the treatment of

Free from Bitterness!

Does not Stain!

The most Generally Applicable and Medicinally Efficient Preparation of Golden-Seal Presented.

Few remedies have so speedily and so thoroughly demonstrated the validity of their claim for a permanent place in the materia medica as Golden-seal. Its efficacy has been extensively tested by physicians during the past few years, and its action in catarrhal inflammations is now regarded as specific. Its antiseptic properties render it useful as a medicament in septic dyspepsia, but it is chiefly of service in the treatment of chronic catarrhal inflammations of mucous membranes-in gastro-intestinal catarrh, in chronic pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, aphthæ, urethritis, vaginitis and allied affections, either administered internally or topically by injection or spray it is invaluable. Its oral employment was for a time limited on account of the inherent bitter taste of the preparations presented. It was soon discovered, however, that the presence of the bitter principle of golden-seal was not essential to the preservation of its medicinal virtues. Pharmacal skill now offers the physician a variety of preparations of golden-seal and its alkaloids to choose from. The most often used has hitherto been the fluid extract golden-seal. The bitter taste of the fluid extract, however, and the yellow stain inseparable from its topical use, has led many, although convinced of its efficacy, to resort to it less often than they would have done had it been free from the objectionable features mentioned.

In fluid golden-seal, colorless, we offer a preparation having obvious advantages over the fluid extract. It is devoid of bitterness-does not stain the linen when applied locally-and has all the efficacy of the fluid extract without its disadvantages-we believe physicians will use fluid golden-seal, colorless, in preference to all other preparations of the drug.

PEPTONIZED EXTRACT OF BEEF

A Concentrated, Palatable, Easily Assimilated Food of the Highest Nutritive Value.

CONTAINS ALL THE NUTRITIVE CONSTITUENTS

OF BEEF.

The superiority of this preparation over other extracts of beef depends upon :

[ocr errors]

1. The large proportion of albuminoids which it contains.

2. The fact that its albuminoid constituents are chiefly in the form of peptones, insuring rapid absorption and ready assimilation. 3. Its appetising flavor.

4. Its perfect and ready solubility in water.

The uses of such a preparation are obvious. It is a concentrated and at the same time an easily assimilated food, useful in all cases of acute disease where sustaining treatment is indicated, and especially valuable in convalescence and in chronic conditions of inanition or malnutrition, particularly where the functions of the stomach are not well performed.

A

One part of the Peptonized Extract of Beef may be said to be the equivalent of eight parts of fresh beef. One teaspoonful (about one half ounce) will make a pint of excellent beef tea. like quantity added to a pint of vegetable soup communicates to it a rich flavor, and converts it into a highly nutritious food. It may be employed in a still more concentrated form, if desired, but from half an ounce to one ounce of the extract is as much as it is generally advisable to give

at one time.

RELATIVE ΤΟ

LACTATED FOOD.

IT IS A COOKED FOOD.

By the use of hign steari tee

the gluten flour used is partially torrefied. This d during the process it is in constant motion, every particle.

Routh says Infant Feeding, fazë 380) that by this process, "the starch granules are rendered mor› serà,able, the gluten redreed to a more porous condition, rea al · acted on 1y the Castrie juice, an 1 as an aliment, therefore, is more nutrite us and dig st. le

IT IS A PREDIGESTED FOOD.

"You state that it is self-digestive regards the conversion of insoluble starch into soluble dextrine and maltose. My experiments with it lead me to hold that this is correct.' I MILNER FOTHERGILL.

IT CONTAINS NO UNCHANGED STARCH. By the peculiar process of m›nui ture every port cle of the cluten our is subjected to the action of the molto-diastase, and by it all the starch contained is transformed into soluble carbohydrates.

Professor CARI. SEIL FR says,

Examination has proved that all the starch granules are converted, as shown by their behavior to polarized light."

NO CANE SUGAR USED.

The basis of Lactated Food is the pure sugar of milk made by the improved processes of the American Milk Sugar Co. The great value of this article has been shown conclusively. Cane sugar is not used in the composition or preparation of the Food on account of its liability to cause irritation by reason of the acetic fermentation which it creates in the stomach. Milk sugar never causes this fermentation or irritation.

IT IS NON-IRRITATING.

By reason of the fact that Lactated Food is partially digested in process of preparation it is assimilated by the feeblest stomach, and no undigested particles pass into the bowels to irritate, and thus cause troublesome and dangerous bowel disorders.

IT IS HIGHLY NUTRITIOUS.

The nutritive elements of Lactated Food are derived from the three great cereals, Wheat, Barley, and Oats. From the Wheat is taken the pure gluten, the most nourishing substance known for the muscles and tissues; from the Barley, all the soluble albuminoid and extractive matter resulting from the most careful malting; and from the Oat, the strengthening properties for which it is so well known. The result is a food which never disappoints, and under which the feeble child or invalid rapidly rallies.

FOR CHOLERA INFANTUM.

It is the chief reliance of many eminent practitioners, and it is the safest food in summer for all young or delicate children.

Another important consideration is its low price, it being much more economical than other foods. We make four sizes, selling for 25 cents, 50 cents, $1.00 and $2.50. A dollar can will furnish one hundred and fifty meals for an infant.

If any physician that has not yet made a trial of the Lactated Food will write us, we will send a package of our regular size, post paid, without charge, with the understanding that it will be given a careful trial as soon as possible. We shall use every precaution to maintain the high standard of this Food, and to insure perfect satisfaction to the profession in its use.

OF

CALISAYA BARK AND IRON.

Each dessertspoonful contains—

Free Phosphorus, gr. 185.

Total Calisaya Alkaloids, gr. 3.
Pyrophosphate of Iron, gr. T

This is the only preparation containing in solution Free Phosphorous Pyrophosphate of Iron and Calisaya Alkaloids. It is the only Elixir of Calisaya which contains an effective proportion of Alkaloids.

The proportion of these Alkaloids is invariable—of Quinia, Quinidia, Cinchonia, Cinchonidia, and Chiniodine. The exhibition of a given dose of these Alkaloids in solution with agreeable pungent aromatics, produces more emphatic and certain results than the same dose in the pill or powder form.

It is the only preparation extant containing Phosphorus in solution. A dessertspoonful actually forms a very effective dose of the combined remedies for an adult.

It is a beautiful bright amber-colored elixir, acceptable alike to the taste and to the stomach.

As a tonic in convalescence from fevers and debilitating diseases; as a brain and nerve tonic and invigorant, these remedies have long enjoyed high repute. As combined in this "Phosphorized Elixir" (Fairchild), better results may be anticipated than from any other form in which they are prepared.

It is important to specify Fairchild's, owing to the great number of similarly named but valueless "Elixirs of Calisaya."
