might be allowed of, with refpect to Mofes's Miracles, it might alfo be allowed with refpect to thofe of the Enchanters, whose working Miracles did alfo harden Pharaoh's heart, as appears, Exod. viii. 19. then the Magicians faid to Pharaob, this is the finger of God, and Pharaohs heart was hardned, and he bearkened not unto them. He was neither moved at the Miracles they wrought, nor at the Confeffion they made, that they were wrought by the finger of God, and the Stop they found to their working any more. He hardned his Heart under every thing that was faid or done, by them,

or Mofes. I look upon their Cafe to be much the fame with that of Moses, so that if God might, with Right and Juftice, work Miracles by Mofes, to harden Pharaoh's heart (in the Senfe before mentioned) he might do the fame by the Magicians; and it seems to me, a great aggravation of his Obftinate Impiety, that when his own Servants (who came with Minds as ill difpos'd as his) came and told him that the finger of God was in all thefe Operations, and that they were themselves convinc'd of the truth of Mofes's Miffion, that he should not hearken to them, but harden

harden his heart the more for what they said to him.

A. I yield you that, that Pharaoh was a very wicked Prince, but we are now, methinks, come to the force of the Objection that I first made -that Pharaoh could not be fo much to be condemn'd, for not being convinc'd by the Miracles he faw wrought, by reason he faw them wrought in Oppofition to each other. Mofes's Miracles were to convince the King that he came from God; Let us fee (fays the King) what our own Magicians can do, before we give this Man credit, and let them firft be called, you know, that when

they came, they did as Mofes did: Why is Mofes now to be believ'd more for his Miracles, than the Magicians? B. Because the Magicians came themselves to the King, and confefs'd, that Mofes wrought his Miracles by the finger of God.

A. Did they at the fame time confefs, that they themfelves had but cozen'd and impofs'd upon him and his Court, and had indeed wrought no Miracles, all the while he thought they had this Ingenuity might have had fome good Effect upon him.

B. Pharaoh, you may be fure, was Judge of that; had they not wrought true Mira

cles, he could not have hardened his Heart under them, as the Scriptures fay he did. The best of your Objection is, that the Miracles the Magicians wrought were true Miracles, and therefore how could the Miracles of Mofes convince them, when the Magicians wrought true Miracles in Oppofition to him? He must therefore believe neither. And the best Anfwer to this, that I can think on, is this, that the Magicians did as good as confefs, that the Miracles they had themselves wrought, were wrought by the fame Power of the fame God, and to the fame Intent that Mofes's were wrought,
