this year 1853, during the long endeavour to stealthily betray Turkey into the hands of Russia. What Herculean Reformer shall cleanse that worse than Augean stable of these English diplomatists?

We must not forget the military evolutions at Chobham, the naval review at Spithead, the satisfactory appearance of the militia. Let us hope, that, spite of quakers, the courage may be equal to the show, and Europe be the better for it. Nor are we mindless of the happy escape of Mitchell and O Donoghue from Australia. And let us take as good omens from the other side of the Atlantic the gallant rescue of the Hungarian Kossta, and the friendly visit of the American Ambassador to Mazzini.

The fire still smoulders in volcanic Europe. yet shall overspread the realms, fertilizing them for the Republic. How despair of Europe when even China is being revolutionized? Under the crust of our English apathy the coals are kindling... At the close of this third year of an endeavour to spread republican principles in England, I have reason to 'bate no jot of heart or hope,' but rather to feel elate, I say not, at the result of my own work, but at the response to my appeal, at the proofs, increasing steadily, of men's desires of reformation, of their disgust at the effeteness of constitutional monarchy and class-government, and their aspiration toward the strength and harmony of the Republic.

No matter how unworthily I may have upheld our flag, true men are gathering around it. Let us care in the coming year to add to our numbers and to organize our powers.
