26121 W58 1898 AUTHOR'S PREFACE TO THE SECOND ENGLISH EDITION. THROUGHOUT the whole book the attempt has been to include all the more important recent additions to our knowledge. Antitoxins and preparations of animal tissues are briefly described. Each of the non-pharmacopoeial drugs which were in the first edition grouped in an appendix is now placed in the body of the book among the drugs whose action it resembles, but it is stated that it is not official. This has been done because it appeared more convenient for the reader. I have to thank those who have been so good as to suggest improvements. It will be found that I have availed myself freely of their suggestions. EDITOR'S PREFACE TO THE FOURTH AMERICAN EDITION. THE appearance of the SECOND ENGLISH EDITION affords the opportunity for a thorough revision of the book. In addition to the re-arrangement in general, the drugs of animal origin are arranged in groups showing their uses, and, in the Appendix, classified according to their source. In presenting this edition he would acknowledge his indebtedness, for numerous and valuable suggestions, to the many teachers, and especially to Dr. R. H. M. Dawbarn, who have used the previous editions in their classrooms, to the reviewers who have courteously, but critically, examined the book, and to Dr. Henry H. Rusby and Dr. Charles Rice for important aid, particularly in regard to the definitions. The writings of most American and foreign authorities have been freely consulted. To bring this work up to date, his own journal files, which comprise all the periodicals devoted to the subjects upon which it treats, have been carefully studied. The unofficial preparations have been reviewed after consideration of the recent literature, and his practical experience with them. For the convenience of the student a very complete index has been prepared with the assistance of Dr. Charles J. Mooney. Brackets [] are used throughout the book to indicate additions by the Editor.
