at Smyrna. On vigorous representation from
the legation the money stolen from Doctor Ship-
ley has been returned, and an apology, at first
declined by the commanding officer of the gen-
darmerie, has been made. Full statement of

structs to ask an audience of the Sultan for the
purpose of presenting a personal message from
