BURNS'S STANDARD READING-BOOKS, ADAPTED TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE REVISED CODE; AND CONTAINING EXERCISES IN SPELLING, WRITING, AND ARITHMETIC. BOOK II. ADAPTED FOR STANDARD II. LONDON: BURNS, LAMBERT, AND QATES, Portman Street and Paternoster Row. PREFACE. THE chief aim proposed in compiling a book for the Second Standard has been to provide easy narratives likely to interest children, and to help them to acquire fluency in reading. The Lessons on Religious Subjects have in general been placed together, so as to form a kind of Course or Series. The Home Exercises may be performed either at home or at school, as is most convenient; but they should be insisted on, as the surest means of progress. Their performance will be greatly facilitated if the scholars buy books for themselves in addition to those provided for their use in school. The Rules for the use of the Signal have been prefixed to the Reading-Lessons, as they will be found of special service at this stage of the instruction. Requirements of Revised Code for Standard II.
