Caius Marius was born on the territory of Arpinum, about 150 years before Christ. Of an obscure origin, he forsook agriculture to take up arms, distinguished himself under Scipio Africanus, conquered Jugurtha, king of Numidia, came into Gaul where he defeated the Teutones, the Ambrones, and the Cimbri : but he always preserved a wild and ferocious temper. His voice was intimidating, his look terrific. Marius being, for the sixth time, raised to the consular dignity, awoke the jealousy of Sylla, his competitor. Obliged to avoid, by flight, the revenge of his cruel adversary, Marius hid himself in the marshes of Minturnæ, but being discovered, he was dragged to that town, and there shut up. A Cimbric soldier then undertook to kill him, to get the reward promised to whomsoever should bring the head of the proscribed warrior.
