Nous avons déjà eu l'occasion de parler de sainte Cécile et de son martyre, sous les numéros 10 et 290, el nous nous occuperons d'autant moins de son histoire, que, comme nous l'avons dit alors, il règne beaucoup d'inexactitude sur les événemens de la vie et de la mort de cette sainte. Dominique Zampieri a peint trois tableaux de l'histoire de sainte Cécile, dans la seconde chapelle à droite de l'église de Saint-Louis-des-Français, à Rome. Dans l'un on la voit distribuant ses biens aux pauvres. Celui-ci, qui est en face, représente sainte Cécile expirante, par suite des blessures qu'elle a reçues au cou; le troisième est son apothéose. En faisant voir sainte Cécile expirante, Dominiquiu a eu soin de faire comprendre qu'elle meurt pour la foi catholique ; une de ses compagnes lui montre le pape Urbain Ier. venant à son secours, et lui donnant sa bénédiction. Un ange lui apporte la palme du martyre et la couronne virginale. Sur le devant, des femmes recueillent avec soin le sang précieux de sainte Cécile. On peut admirer dans ce tableau la grandeur du talent de Dominique Zampieri, qui l'a étudié avec un soin particulier, quoique cependant ces travaux aient été peu payés. La pureté du dessin y est égale à la vigueur du coloris; cependant cette partie a éprouvé quelques détériorations. La mort de sainte Cécile a été gravée par J.-B. Having already had occasion to speak of St. Cecilia and of her martyrdom, nos 10 and 290, we shall repeat the less of her history, for, as we said at the time, there exists much inaccuracy respecting the events of the life and death of this female Saint. Domenico Zampieri has painted three pictures from of the history of St. Cecilia, in the second chapel on the right of the church of San Luigi dei Francesi, at Rome. In the first she is seen distributing her wealth among the poor; the present one, which is in front, represents St. Cecilia expiring from the wounds she has received in her neck; the third picture is her Beatification. In representing St Cecilia expiring, Domenichino has taken care to impart that she dies for the Christian faith; one of her companions shows her Pope Urbane I, coming to her assistance and giving her his blessing. An angel brings her the palm of martyrdom and the virgin's crown. In the foreground some women are carefully trying to save the precious blood of St. Cecilia. The extent of Domenico Zampieri's admirable talent may be discerned in this picture, to which he seems to have given a particular attention, although his works were but little paid. Its correct designing is equal to the vigorous colouring; the latter part has however undergone some deterioration. The Death of St Cecilia has been engraved by J. B. Pascalini, by J.
