Twelve years' acquaintance of the medical profession with Kasagra, the standard tonic laxative, finds this preparation a greater favorite than ever. In order to avoid the numerous imitations of this article, it is always advisable to write the word "Kasagra" without abbreviation, for in that way there can be no misunderstanding of the prescribers's intention.

Summer Months.--Dioviburnia is the remedy par excellence in cholera morbus, dysentery and other bowel troubles prevalent during the summer months. Free from all narcotics or deleterious drugs. As a uterine tonic and antispasmodic, Dioviburnia is unequalled. In the treatment of Dysmenorrhea it is unexcelled. Dose, dessert spoonful in hot water every two or three hours.

Hagee's Cordial of Cod Liver Oil Compound is one of the most popular cod liver oil preparations on the market. All the nutritive properties of the oil are retained, and the disgusting and nauseating elements are eliminated. It offers to the profession a reconstructive of great value. It is easily digested and assimilated, and as a builder it has no equal.-International Journal of Surgery.

The Early Diagnosis of Locomotor Ataxia.-The poor results derived from the treatment of tabes is often due to the fact that an early diagnosis has not been made or that patients do not apply for treatment in the early stages of the disease. Erb (Med. Wochenschr.) details a series of cases which had all been preceded by symptoms of secondary syphilis, some as far back as twenty-four years. one group of cases the tendon reflexes were normal even after four to seven years' duration of slight lancinating pain, bladder insufficiency, sensory disturbances, easy fatigue, slight pupillary sign and "Romberg's Symptom." A second group presented no subjective symptoms whatever, and but very few and almost unnoticeable objective symptoms. Still another group was attended by marked gastro-intestinal disturbances, not typical of tabes, and with bilateral paresis of the sixth nerve and pupil sign. Author insists on the necessity of always investigating the knee-jerk and pupil reflex in suspected cases. Tabetic symptoms with an antecedent syphilis are always serious. Absence of a syphilitic history does not establish the existence of tabes, even though some symptoms may exist. For the pains in tabes dorsalis, Antikamnia and Salol Tablets have been found most excellent when given in doses of two tablets every two or three hours. The antikamnia acts particularly upon the spinal cord and its sensory tracts, and consequently takes the place of opium and its alkaloids so often used to relieve patients subject to these attacks. The favorable effect of salol in this and similar conditions is well-known.

Aletris Cordial is an emmenagogue, not abortifacient. It cures congestion of the uterus and ovaries, and favors the occurrence of the menstrual discharge. It is also especially appropriate when the amenorrhea depends upon anaemia. It regulates menstruation and is useful in all the derangements of menstruation, namely, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea and metrorrhagia, provided these disturbances be idiopathic. By curing menstrual disease, a common cause of sterility, it will also cure the sterility. It is also recommended in erosions of the cervix and vulvar eczema.

EXTRACT FROM CLINICAL REPORT.

THE MOST ACTIVE AND RELIABLE COMBATANT IN UTERINE DISORDERS.

By E. ALFRED MALLETTE, M.D., Philadelphia, Pa.

I have used a number of remedies for the cure of amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhea and kindred ailments to which the female is subject, and have found in Ergoapiol (Smith) the most reliable and active combatant in uterine disorders. After using it in my practice the past two years, I find it acts promptly upon the mucous membrane in delayed menstruation, in allaying inflammation and in dispelling pain. It acts very favorably upon the ovarian tract. A few cases in my own practice are here cited:

Case No. 1.—Miss T., age 22. Never having menstruated, although having full developed organs of puberty for seven years previous; found, upon examination, the uterine organs normal, no imperforate hymen. Had been operated upon for otorrhoea two years previous, which resulted in complete deafness. I prescribed Ergoapiol (Smith), two capsules three times a day for ten days, when a scanty menstruation appeared; continued for three months with Ergoapiol (Smith), four days before the menstrual period was due, when normal conditions resulted.

Case No. 2.—Miss D., age 23. Having dysmenorrhoea and menorrhagia at frequent intervals, was placed on Ergoapiol (Smith), giving six capsules daily for five days, when pain ceased; with three months' treatment normal menstruations were established, with no hemorrhages appearing between the periods.

Case No. 3.-Mrs. H., age 23. Was left in a very anaemic condition following miscarriage, when amenorrhoea followed, and was delayed for two periods. I prescribed Ergoapiol (Smith), one capsule three times a day, when normal menstruation returned, and weak system built up with no after-results.

Case No. 4.-Mrs. B., age 43. Was referred to me having irregular menstruations two or three times a month. Ovarian pains constantly, profuse and purulent leucorrhoea. I had about decided to curette, when the condition of the heart dissuaded me, and resolved to use Ergoapiol (Smith) in large doses, when a profuse hemorrhage for seven days followed, evacuating large blood clots, relieving the patient to normal condition, with no after-effect, and with subsequent treatment was restored to good health.

Editorial Items.—Continued.

A Well Deserved Tribute.-The University of Michigan has conferred the degree of Master of Arts upon Mr. Frederick Stearns, of Detroit, the founder of the house of Frederick Stearns & Company.

Melena Neonatorum.-Holt reports a case of frequent and persistent vomiting of blood in a robust new-born infant, apparently cured by the administration of suprarenal extract in grain doses every hour.

Senna. The laxative principle of senna, emodin, according to Tschirsch and Hiepe (Notes on New Remedies), is present in larger quantity in the commonly rejected fruit than in the leaves. The emodin is combined with resin.

Glycosuria in Whooping Cough.--In the Glasgow Hospital Reports, Thomson, drawing conclusions from 7,370 urinary examinations in 82 patients, states that dextrose is commonly present during the spasmodic stage of this disease.

Endurance of Vegetarians.-Baelz, of Tokio, (quoted in Medical Standard) finds that the vegetarian Japanese of the interior possesses considerably more endurance than the meat-eating foreigners. Japanese bones are soft, but rachitis is unknown in Japan.

Malignant Hemorrhage.-Says the International Journal of Surgery: "The ether or chloride of ethyl spray will sometimes prove quite useful in stopping severe bleeding from cancerous or other ulcerations in which the hemorrhage is rather of an interstitial than an arterial character."

The New Aphrodisiac.-Yohimbin hydrochlorate, an apocyanaceous alkaloid, is highly recommended as a hyperemic stimulant in cases of neurasthenic impotence. The daily dose at the beginning is three tablets of 5 mgm. each. Large doses given to animals act as cardiac paralyzants.

The "Fourth Disease."-Several contributions have appeared. lately on the identity of this provisionally named disease, which resembles and yet differs from measles, scarlet fever and German measles. The signs and symptoms of the "fourth disease" resemble those of rubella most closely, but the rash of the former is uniform and finely punctate (like scarlatina), first appearing around the mouth; desquamation is rare, and posterior cervical glandular enlargement is absent.
