REPORT OF CAPT. E. R. STUART, CORPS OF ENGINEERs, officeR IN CHARGE, FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 1908.

By act of Congress approved June 16, 1906, the sum of $30,000 was appropriated for the erection of a monument and an inclosure for same on Kings Mountain, York County, S. C., to commemorate the victory of the American forces at that place October 7, 1780.

After consideration it was recommended and approved that the firm of McKim, Mead & White, architects, New York City, be employed to prepare designs and specifications for this monument. The type of monument decided upon is an obelisk bearing four tablets, for inscriptions, within an inclosure.

Specifications were prepared and approved, and bids opened April 23, 1908, for the construction of this monument, and contract was awarded to The Southern Marble and Granite Company, Spartanburg, S. G., to construct a monument 115 feet 3 inches high, of granite from the quarry of The North Carolina Granite Corporation, Mount Airy, N. C., for the sum of $25,000.
