"Reminiscences of the Herschells," published by Miss Maria Mitchell, the astronomer, in the Century Magazine for October, occurs the following account of a conversation which gives the calculation to which reference has often been made, in a more striking form than we can remember to have seen it before.

Sir John Herschell asked: "If, at the time of Cheops, or three thousand years ago, one pair of human beings had lived, and war, pestilence, and famine had not existed, and only natural death came to man, and that this pair had doubled once in thirty years, and their children had doubled and so on, how large would the population of the world be at this time-could they stand upon the earth as a plane?" We thought they could not. "But if they stood closely, and others stood on their shoulders man, woman, and child. how many layers would there be ?" I said, "Perhaps three." "How many feet of men ?" he asked. "Possibly thirty," I said. "Oh, more!" "Well we'll say a hundred." more!" Miss Herschell said, "Enough to reach the moon sun." "More, more!" cried Sir John, exulting in our astonishment; "bid higher, take a hundred times the distance to Neptune and it is very That is my way," said he, "of whitewashing war, pestilence, and famine."-Brit. DR. P. W. LATHAM, Downing Professor of Medicine at Cambridge (England), lecturing on the treatment of gout and rheumatism at the Royal College of Physicians, says:

"The True Salicylic Acid obtained from the vegetable kingdom must alone be employed. If you have to give large doses, avoid giving the artificial product obtained from carbolic acid, however much it may have been dialyzed and purified. Give the acid without any alkali or base," etc.

A reprint of this exceedingly valuable paper will be sent on application. A DESIDERATUM

not always appreciated:

The quality of medicines used in the prescription is as important a factor in the cure of disease as a correct diagnosis; and a physician violates no code, either of ethics or morals, in demanding of his druggist that which he knows to be reliable, instead of leaving to the latter to decide whose preparations he shall or shall not use.
