John Brunton, aged 81 years, member of Div. 29. Brother Brunton was one of the old pioneers of the B. of L. E. and obtained the charter for Div. 16, organized December 12, 1863. Brother Brunton came from Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1847, the year he became of age. He soon obtained employment in the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a machinist and a year later he went with the Baldwin Locomotive Works, and later secured a position as fireman on the old Pennsylvania Central, and was eventually promoted to an engineer on that road. He went to Ohio in 1855 and secured a position as engineer on the old Bee Line (now Big Four). He remained with the road some 25 years, running much of the time between Bellefontaine and Iadianapolis. In the first year of the existence of the B. of L. E. he became interested, and as said above, was instrumental in the organization of Div. 16, and repre sented his Division as delegate at the convention in Cincinnati in 1867, and by request of the delegates offered a prayer at the close of the conven tion. In 1885 he moved to Colorado and entered the service of the D. & R. G. Ry., and joined Div. 29 at Pueblo. He was always of a deeply religious turn of mind and was licensed as a local preacher while living in Galion; and when the Y. M. C. A. was started at Brightwood, Colo., he was put in charge and eventually was made chaplain of the D. & R. G., a position created specially for him.
