tration. I have for a long time been in the habit of prescribing it in a little larger doses than are recommended, and any bad results from its use must be due to some idiosyncrasy on the part of the patient."

Edw. L. H. Barry, Jr., M. D., Jerseyville, Ill., says: I have used Aletris Cordial with excellent results in the following: Miss R., 19 years of age, brunette, well developed, but troubled with dysmenorrhea, called at my office, and after explaining her affliction said, "Doctor, if there is anything you can prescribe to relieve my suffering do so, for life is a burden to me now." I thought of the Aletris cordial at once, and gave her a six-ounce bottle, directing her to take a teaspoonful three times a day commencing four or five days before the regular period. Several weeks afterward she returned with the empty bottle remarking, "I've come back for more of that medicine, for its the only thing I ever had to give me relief." I can cheerfully recommend Aletris Cordial to the profession.

Sanmetto in Bright's Disease.-Dr. C. E. Stafford, Trigg, Va., writing, says: I have used Sanmetto with the very best results. I succeeded in making a case of Bright's disease much more comfortable by the use of Sanmetto, and am satisfied it should be used oftener in this disease. I regard Sanmetto as an efficient and elegant remedy for diseases of the genito-urinary organs.

ANHALONIUM LEWINII-MESCAL BUTTON-A REPORT OF FIVE CASES, IN WHICH THE TINCTURE WAS EXHIBITED IN FOUR-DROP DOSES DAILY.

BY D. A. RICHARDSON, M. D.,
Denver, Colo.

Case 1.-In the New York Medical Journal for August 8, 1896, will be found my first report on the action of the Tinctura Anhalonium Lewinii, in a case of neuralgia of the ophthalmic division of the trifacial nerve. This, gentlemen, was given every night on retiring, four drops of the tincture, and his pain ceased at once, and has not returned. Since that time he has passed through a severe attack of typhoid fever, contracted while in the hills about Cripple Creek, and his heart received no damage therefrom, although he is a very fat man, of a pronounced lymphatic temperament and physique. It is my opinion that the continued use of this medicament, influenced a prophylactic effect against fatty infiltration in this instance. The drug is certainly a powerful cardiac tonic.

He began the use of the drug on the evening of January 25, 1896, and continuously took it for a period of nine weeks. After the lapse of this time he had lost twelve pounds in weight, which, however, he regained on discontinuing the use of the medicine. He reports himself as well November 16, 1896.

During the progress of this case, my attention was called to the urine, micturition being frequently performed and a large amount of urine passed; and I at once made up my mind to test the drug as a solvent or eliminant of urea, and uric acid. That

the drug does cause the elimination of urea, will be clearly shown in the report of the following cases.

Case 2.-Inflammatory Rheumatism. This gentleman has suffered many acute attacks of greater or less severity. This attack was not especially severe. Still there was some oedema of both ankles. I placed him on the usual anti-rheumatic treatment, and also exposed him to the action of four drops of the Anhalonium every night.

t

The inflammatory symptoms speedily subsided and I withdrew all medication except the Anhalonium, which he continued to take. At the end of the second week, he went to Leadville. His pulse at this time was regular but soft and compressible. He returned from Leadville after an absence of a week, and complained of passing a great deal of urine, but had suffered no rheumatic symptoms. An intercostal neuralgia had disappeared and his pulse had become firm.

This gentleman began the use of the drug on May 15, 1896, and continued its use for a period of six weeks. He reported himself as well August 8, 1896.

Urinalysis: Urea eliminated at the end of the third week, 234 %11⁄2 litres of urine passed daily.

=

Urea eliminated at the end of the fourth week 3% 2% litres of urine or more passed daily.

Urea eliminated at the end of the sixth week. 2%. A large amount of urine was being passed daily.

At the end of the seventh week, uric acid crystals ceased to appear in the urine and also the triple phosphates.

Case 3.-Neuralgia of Trifacial Nerve. This patient had suffered terribly. The only relief from the pain, which was crushingly intense, was gotten by remaining in total darkness. This patient had been in total darkness almost continuously for five months prior to my treating her. An exposure to light instantly caused excruciating pain in the head, and she was beginning to despair of ever being any better.

She had consulted many physicians, and numerous ophthalmologists had prescribed without avail. I placed her on the tincture, in four drop doses taken each evening, and if pain was severe during 'the forenoon, a drop was taken at noon.

At the termination of eighteen days all pain had ceased, and although during the succeeding six months she suffered a few attacks of cephalaigia due to constipation, she was not troubled by light nor did the headaches last above an hour's time. Twenty-one days after she took her first dose, I increased the dose to five drops

on retiring, and she has ever since attended to her household duties. After the third week, micturition was abundant. The skin became clear and bright, instead of muddy as before the exhibition. of the drug. The drawn appearance of the face gave place to one of comfort, and to-day she is virtually a well woman. I had advised the radical removal of the Gasserian ganglion in this case, prior to exposing her to the action of this drug. She had already made good progress in the usual, sedative treatment, and was in a sad condition. Aside from the Anhalonium this patient took, no medicine except for the condition of constipation."

This patient began the use of Anhalonium May 11, 1896, and continued its use six weeks consecutively. The last three weeks she took five drops daily. After this time she occasionally took the drug for cephalalgia and reports herself satisfied with its action November 16, 1896.

Case 4-Inflammatory Rheumatism and Gout. This gentleman has endured several attacks of gout, first of one great toe and then of the other great toe, the interchange of toes being due to the mixture of the two diatheses. At the time I first visited him he was in bed with a temperature of 101°, the right ankle very painful and the left great toe swollen. Heart not normal. Urine very scanty and high colored, and amphoteric. I placed him on the usual treatment May 15, 1896, and he arose from his bed on the eleventh day thereafter, and reports to-day, November 19, 1896, that he has not had a twinge of pain since May 26, 1896. He took in all, one and one-half drachms of the tincture of Anhalonium, in four-drop doses nightly. His weight decreased some fifteen pounds, and he spent a month in and about Leadville and other places of high altitude immediately after rising from bed. His heart became regular and pulse firm, but there are still some indications of myocarditis present. Micturition abundant.

Case 5.-Rheumatoid Arthritis. I do not use the term arthritis deformans, as this case is positively a sequela of chronic rheumatism. This lady has been treated by many physicians during the past twelve years, and the deposits began to take place in the joints recently, viz: within two years. She has never consulted a neurologist.

I made my first examination September 6, 1896, and at that time both her hands and wrists were ankylosed by deposits in every joint. There was very limited motion, and the characteristic. position was positive. The other joints of the body, were moderately affected, but the condition was most marked in the hands. I at once placed her on a rich diet, including rare meats, which was

a radical change of diet in her case, and exposed her to the action of four-drop doses nightly of the tincture of Anhalonium Lewinii.

She ceased to suffer pain at the end of the first week and has steadily improved. The improvement is most marked by the disappearance of the deposits in the joints, and the almost complete restoration of joint function in all the joints of her body so affected. She refused cod liver oil, I am sorry to say, for I believe there is no food so valuable in this diathesis as it combined with iron in some form. I prefer Eli Lilly's Liquor Ferri, which I believe is Malate of Iron.

This patient has gained in weight, although micturition has increased. She is still progressing favorably. September 6, 1896, sp. gr. of urine 1.024. Urinalysis Sept. 9, 1896: Amount of urine passed, 14 litres. Sp. gr. 1.027. Urea eliminated, 4.375 grs. per ounce. Urinalysis, Sept. 11, 1896: Urine passed, two litres; urea eliminated, 5.25 grs. per ounce. Urinalysis, Sept. 14, 1896: She eliminated 4% of urea, and the deposits were disappearing. She is still exposed to the action of the drug and is micturiting freely, and eliminating 2% or more of urea daily. She will either recover or at least the progress of the condition will be checked.

In considering these cases and others similar to them, two positive facts regarding this drug will be noted: the elimination from the body of a large amount of urine and the freedom from pain. In all cases pain is promptly removed in one or two days, and an excess of urine commences to be passed during the time between the middle of the second week and the beginning of the fourth week.

I notice the urine increases in saltness, and the action of the drug may be to remove the element of sodium from the body. The urinalysis revealed an abundance of chlorides eliminated. It may be that in Case 5 the joint deposits were discharged, owing to the drug taking of the sodium in their composition freeing the urate, which was washed away from the body in the usual process. Whether this be so or not, I leave until I am permitted greater opportunity for investigation.

In this paper I have endeavored to give facts regarding Tr. Anhalonium Lewinii, not to discuss the uric acid diathesis. Much could be said on that subject, and still I trust that no undue criticism will be advanced regarding this article until the drug has been given personal experimentation.

In one instance failure is reported to me, but the drug was not regularly taken for any length of time-over one week-and it never, in my hands, has produced diuresis in less than two weeks.
