THE COLORADO STATE MEDICAL SOCIETY.

OBSERVATIONS AND IMPRESSIONS.

The officers for next year are, Robert Levy, president; H. R. Bull, first vice-president; Frank Finney, second vice-president; S. D. Van Meter, third vice-president; H. B. Whitney, corresponding secretary; Miss Laura L. Liebhardt, recording secretary; H. H. Bucknum, assistant recording secretary; W. F. McClelland, treasurer.

Only one ballot was taken in the election of officers, it being for corresponding secretary. All other offices were filled by accla

mation.

There was an unusual number of declinations by the various nominees for official positions. These withdrawals manifested the best of taste on the part of the gentlemen nominated and were certainly in the interests of harmony and progress. On the whole the last session of the society was probably "up to the limit." A very gratifying feature was the utter absence, apparently at least, of acrimony and contention.

The papers and demonstrations were fully up to the standard of former meetings. Discussions were somewhat infrequent, but considering the large number of articles presented there was hardly time for more debate.

Why is it that so many physicians promise to read papers be fore the society and then fail to do so? Specialists, of all practitioners, should be able to meet their engagements in this respect.

Forty-eight new members were added to the roll of the society. One applicant was rejected.

The retiring president's address was precisely what might have been expected from such a man, being in the main a nianly and kindly plea for professional courtesy and good fellowship.

The idea of a consolidation of the three regular medical schools is theoretically in some respects a very good one, but "when the lion and the lamb shall lie down together-"

There is much to be said, nevertheless, in favor of separate and independent medical colleges. Not the least of these reasons is the stimulus of honorable competition and emulation between the colleges. Smaller classes also have the advantage of more personal didactic and clinical instruction. Thus we see there are compensations in all things.

connection with an injury to the elbow, was well received by a large audience. The uses of the new agent were further discussed by Drs. McHugh, Miel, Rogers and Leonard Freeman. Dr. Hershey deserves the thanks of his fellow members for his unstinted efforts in this matter.

Dr. J. M. Foster, chairman of the executive committee, received a well deserved rising vote of thanks for the unselfish and efficient work he had done in making the meeting a success.

The printed programme was a neat and tasteful production of the printer's art.

The judicious systematic arrangement of the papers met with the approval of all concerned.

The attendance on the whole was somewhat lighter than at the previous meeting. Among the professional brethren and sisters. present from outside the city were Drs. Campbell and Gildea, of Colorado Springs; Dr. Melvin, of Saguache; Drs. Lowrie and Ambrook, of Boulder; Dr. H. R Burns, of Louisville; Dr. Kahn, of Leadville; Drs. Lee and McHugh, of Fort Collins; Dr. Bulette, of Pueblo; Dr. Bellrose, of Eaton; Dr. Fierstone, of Fort Morgan; Dr. Stowe, of Glenwood Springs; Dr. Arbogast, of Breckenridge; Dr. Finney, of La Junta; and Dr. Bull, of Grand Junction.

The president's reception at his residence in West Denver was attended by about 250 people. Sweet music and the fragrance of flowers added their charm to the occasion, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody. The wants of the "inner man" were not neglected.

The summer solstice is a languorous time tempting to indolence and repose. Though eyes and ears be open the mind is prone neither to see nor hear. Nevertheless it will all be printed in a book by and by for digestion at leisure.

The ordinary of the Brown Palace Hotel made a very accessible and serviceable place of meeting, amply commodious yet not unduly large and with plenty of good air and light.

The Dutch lunch and the banquet were both participated in by a goodly number, who partook with relish of the appetizing, if somewhat indigestible viands. Dum vivimus vivamus.

The munificent offer of the Colorado Hotel and Glenwood Hot Springs Company was accepted by not less than 175 physicians. and their wives, who availed themselves of the unparalleled opportunity of seeing this part of the state and the far-famed springs.

The exhibition room was as usual a cynosure during intermis.

sions. J. Durbin had a well selected display of fine instruments. The Denver Medical and Law Book Co. exhibited a library of the latest medical and surgical works. Other firms represented were The Upjohn Granule Co., E. Fougera & Co., Fairchild Bros. & Foster, C. Howe & Co., John Wyeth & Bro., The Ford Optical and Instrument Co., Paul Weiss, and the Horlick Food Co. A unique and acceptable advertisement was the malted milk ice cream.

Perhaps it is a little early to speak of next year's session. Still it will do no harm at least at this time to urge the members of the society to begin to develop plans whereby the next meeting may be made even more successful and profitable than the last.
