The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography. No. 3, Vol. IV., January 1897. Richmond, U.S.A.

THIS Part gives the proceedings of the Virginia Historical Society for the past year, with its Officers and Members, which number 752-a goodly company with a balance of cash in hand of upwards of £50, and a permanent fund now amounting to nearly £450. It is pleasing to note that its presents from members and friends comprise family records, State papers, correspondence, some of which has been given and handsomely bound by our friend and subscriber the Hon. R. C. Winthrop of Boston, pictures and photographs, and two very handsome swords, one belonging to Commodore Arthur Sinclair, given him for his valour when in command of U.S. vessel "General Pike" in an engagement with the British fleet on Lake Erie in 1812, and the other sword belonging to Midshipman Wm. Beverly Sinclair of the Confederate Navy, who, when only 17, while at sea gave his life to save that of a sailor from drowning in July 1864. The Society has agreed to publish the MS. of the London Company's minutes, and its members look forward with interest for it. The articles in this part comprise an account of the attack by the Dutch on the Virginia fleet in 1667, and mentions how the Dutch between 1665 to 1667 advanced with their fleet up to the Nore, burning three English men-of-war, and blockading the Thames for weeks.
