Labor of the convicts in this penitentiary is let out to contractors who pay the State a stipulated sum for services rendered, the State furnishing shops and necessary supervision in preserving order.

The prison has an excellent day school under the direction of chaplain; also a fine library of seven thousand volumes; a number of newspapers and magazines are sent by their publishers to the prison.

Religious services are held regularly.
