Q. 19.And is every the smallest deviation from this holy law of love, sinful ?

A. Yes; every defect is a transgression of the law, which demands perfect obedience.

A-Adultery is a sin committed between two persons, the one, or both of them married unto another,

Q. 2.Has God declared that he will punish those who commit this sin ?

A. Yes; for This is an heinous crime; an iniquity to be punished of the judges; a fire that consumeth unto destruction." Job. 31. 11, 12. Marriage is honourable among all men, and the bed undefiled; but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge." Heb. 13. 4. } Q. 3.-Did God inflict any punishment up. on such persons in this world?

A. Yes; he commanded them to be put to death, which was the same punishment as for murder. Lev. 20, 10, The man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adultery and the adulteress put to death.”

Q: 4. And has he said that he will punish them after death?

A. Yes; for it is written that, neither "Forpicators, nor idolators, nor adulterers shall inherit the kingdom of God." 1 Cor. 6. 9.

Q. 5.-But is adultery the only crime which

is forbidden in this Commandment?

A-No; the Commandment forbids all kinds of uncleanness, and every thing contrary to perfect modesty. "The fearful, and the unbe◄. lieving, and the abominable, and the murderers, and whoremongers, shall have their portion in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." Rev. 21. 8.

Q. 6. Is it not very sinful then to use bad, words, and to be indecent in our conversation? A. Very sinful, indeed; for such words proceed out of an evil heart, and tend to excite wicked desires in the heart, Fornication, and all uncleanness; or covetousness, let it not be. once named among you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient, but rather giving of thanks," Eph. 5. 3, 4.

Q. 7. And ought we not carefully to avoid every thing which may lead to the sin of uncleanness ?

A.-Yes; we should avoid with the greatest care whatever tends to raise indecent thoughts; not only all immodest actions, and bad words, but all wanton looks and motions, and all immodest dress, for all these things are sinful and dangerous.

Q. 8. Is there any thing particularly bad in the sin of uncleanness, more than in other sins? A. Yes; this is the most degrading sin of all others; for nothing makes men so like unto the brute beasts, and so much extinguishes the light of reason and understanding. Eph. 4. 18,

19. " Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, through the | ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart, who being past feeling, have given themselves over to work all uncleanness with greediness."

Q. 9-And is not this sin mentioned as a particular judgment from God?

A. Yes; for it is written, "He that is ab horred of the Lord, shall fall therein." Prov. 22. 14. And St. Paul, (Rom. 1. 18,) after describing the gross idolatry of the heathens, says, that for this cause God gave them up unto uncleanness, as if uncleanness were bad enough to

punish men for the great sin of worshipping stocks and stones.

Q. 10.-Repeat our Lord's explanation of this Commandment.

A. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery; but I say unto you, that whoso looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery already with her in his heart.” Mat. 5. 27, 28.

Q. 11. Then there is such a thing as heartadultery, as well as heart-murder ?

A.—Yes; and therefore this Commandment, like all the others, being so exceeding broad, Every mouth must be stopped, and all the world become guilty before God. For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." Rom. 3. 19%

The attention of parents and teachers is particularly called to Questions 8 and 9. Surrounded as children are with danger in this country, we should be very watchful over them and should endeavour to instil into their minds, from their earliest youth, an abhorrence of the

discharge our duty towards them in this respect, we must ourselves have a deep conviction of the evil of it. How awfully are the Scriptures quoted in those questions exemplified amongst us! Let us read them again and again, and tremble, and pray for our dear children.

THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT.

Q. 1.Why is it wrong to steal ? A. Because it is an act of rebellion against God, and a violation of the whole law.

Q. 2.-How is it an act of rebellion against God?

A. Because, when God as the Great Proprietor of all things, gives to us what portion he pleases of this world's goods, it is evidently an act of wilful opposition to God, for any man to deprive another of his property.

Q. 3.And how is it a violation of the whole law?

A. Because, the fundamental precept of the law is this, Whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, do ye even so to them;" and to steal is evidently a violation of this, for
