that I should keep God's holy will and commandments, and walk in the same all the days of my life.

Q. What do you mean by renouncing the works of the devil, the pomps and vanity of this wicked world, and all the sinful lusts of the flesh?

A. I mean putting them away from me, and not following after them, or practising them.

Q. Why is the world called wicked?

A. Because sin has made it so; the spirit of the world is opposite to the spirit of God; and the god of this world is the great enemy of our souls, and of the true God.

Q. What do you mean by believing all the Articles of the Christian Faith?

A. I mean not only professing them, or learning them by heart and repeating them, but really receiving them as true, and acting under a firm persuasion of their truth.

Q. What are the Articles of your Christian Faith?

A. Three, viz. that God the Father made me and all the world; that God the Son redeemed me and all mankind; and that God the Holy

Ghost sanctifieth me and all the elect people of

God.

Q. What do you mean by redeeming ?

A. Delivering from death by paying a price.

Q. Why was it necessary that a price should be paid to deliver us from death?

A. Because we are naturally under sentence of death, as sinners and rebels against God.

Q. What price was paid by God the Son?
A. The price of his own blood.

Q. What do you mean when you say that God the Holy Ghost sanctifieth you?

A. To sanctify is to make holy, or to make good; and so I mean that the Holy Ghost maketh me good, who am by nature wicked.

Q. Cannot your parents make you good >

A. No; they can only instruct me, and set me a good example; they cannot change my heart God only can do that.

:

Q. Where are you to learn God's holy will?
A. In the Bible.

Q. What do you mean then by saying, that you have promised to keep God's holy will and commandments?

A. I mean that I will read the Bible, and learn his will there, and then endeavour to put it in practice; taking his word for my rule and guide all the days of my life.

Q. Why ought you to lay these promises to heart?

A. Because it is my duty and happiness to, forsake every evil way, to believe what God has revealed, and to do what he commands.

Q. When you go to be confirmed, how ought you to engage in that important business?

A. I ought to do it with deliberation, with sincerity, and with prayer.

Q. What do you mean by doing it with deliberation?

A. I mean, considering seriously what I am. going to do, and not performing it in a trifling.

manner.

Q. Why should you be serious about it?

A. Because it is the most important and. serious concern in which I can be employed: and if I am not serious, I cannot expect to get any good by it; but on the contrary, must provoke God to withhold his blessing.

Q. What do you mean by doing it with şincerity?

A. I mean, the doing it with an intention of performing my promise, meaning what I say, and really purposing by God's grace to forsake sin, and to serve Him all the days of my life, Q. Why should you thus do it with sincerity?

A. Because I should otherwise tell a lie to God, and that would be very wicked indeed. Q. What do you mean by doing it with prayer?

A. I mean praying to God for his blessing, and for grace so to feel my obligations and duties, as to remember and fulfil them,

Q. Why should you pray to God for his blessing?

A. Because it is in vain for me to go to Church to be confirmed, except he give his blessing, and enable me to put in practice my promises.

Q. Will he give you his grace in answer to prayer?

A. Yes; for he hath said, Ask and ye shall receive ;" and again, "If ye being evil

know how to give good gifts unto your chil «dren, how much more shall your heavenly "Father give his Holy Spirit to them that ask him." Lu. 11, 13,

Q. But are not you too young to pray

?

A. No: I cannot begin too soon to pray to God. King Josiah was only eight years old when he began to serve and fear the God of his fathers and God has promised that all they who seek him early shall find him.”

Q. What will be your duty after being confirmed ?

A. It will be my duty to remember the promises that I have solemnly made before God and the Church; and to pray that God would enable me to fulfil them, giving all diligence to serve and please God, and to do my duty in that state of life unto which it hath pleased God to call me.

A Prayer before Confirmation

O Lord God! who searchest the hearts of men; thou knowest my heart at this time, and seest with what dispositions I am about to enter thy house. O give me grace to consider seriously the nature of my present undertaking.
