FROM THE MATHEMATICAL DEPARTMENT.

To Normal Gradu

ates and Undergraduates who are Teaching:

To Normal Stu

dents Temporarily Absent from School.

To Would-Be Normal Students.

If you are enthusiastic in regard to the methods of treating the various divisions of arithmetic and algebra which are taught here, and if you desire to use the same in your classes to the best advantage, I shall be pleased to furnish you at 8 cents each, express prepaid, copies of "Methods in Algebra," and at 12 cents each, express prepaid, copies of "Arithmetic Reviewed." These books should be placed in the hands of the pupils and should be retailed by your dealers at 10 cents and 15 cents, respectively. The price of single copies is 25 cents. My experience warrants me in saying that pupils who are required to master rigid proofs of principles, master not only the principles, but the examples also, in less time than other pupils master the examples alone. Take care of the principles, and the examples will take care of themselves. These books, if used in connection with your regular text books, will afford you most gratifying results. When your pupils have mastered the subjects as outlined in the "Methods" they have mastered them for "keeps." Do not introduce them without the full consent of your school board; you will find little difficulty in securing such permission if you ask to put in these books for supplementary work.

If you have not passed arithmetic, B algebra, C algebra, or geometry, why not take up one of these branches at home and master it by correspondence? You can take the same work, week by week, that the regular class is taking and thus keep in touch with the school. When you return, you can take the examination with a fair chance of doing well. In this way, many have accomplished thoroughly satisfactory work.

By taking a course in arithmetic by correspondence, if you faithfully master the work assigned, you may make sure of entering the Normal proper, and may possibly secure advanced standing. You will find it both pleasant and profitable, if you can succeed in joining the Normal instead of the Sub-Normal classes when you enter the school.

To Teachers in General.

TERMS for TWEN TY LESSONS BY CORRESPONDENCE.

The lessons by correspondence are conducted with special reference to methods of teaching. You cannot hope to get as much from these courses as you can secure from our class room, but you can get more than some derive from oral instruction. Suppose you were to take twenty lessons in arithmetic, twenty weeks; twenty lessons in elements of algebra, twenty weeks; twenty lessons in advanced algebra, twenty weeks; and twenty lessons in geometry, twenty weeks. The entire course would take two years and would cost, exclusive of books and postage, only $10. If you are proficient in arithmetic but have never studied algebra and geometry, you will find a world of suggestion in these two branches. After mastering algebra, you will wonder how you ever had the courage to teach arithmetic without a knowledge of algebra. Every teacher can find six hours a week for systematic self-improvement; no home study will yield better results than application to mathematics. If all the teachers in our district and graded schoolswould connect themselves with higher institutions by correspondence work during the school year, and by actual attendance at the summer sessions and at the regular sessions, when possible, the number of graduates would be greatly increased, and the efficiency of the teachers wonderfully augmented.

The system is the only system yet heard from in which the fact is recognized that slant is an individual matter, that the slant of handwriting varies and that everyone has a natural slant.

It is also the only system in Kansas that has grown into public favor entirely without the support of a publishing house and without agents to urge its adoption.
