INTRODUCTORY NOTE

DURING the past three years, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York has conducted a series of addresses on legal topics at the House of the Association under the auspices of its Committee on Lectures and Conferences. The subjects discussed covered a wide range, from the practical questions affecting the everyday life of the average attorney to problems in the higher realms of jurisprudence. The lecturers on each subject have been men specially qualified by experience to deal with it.

The attendance at these lectures has been composed not only of practising lawyers, but also of students and laymen, who have frequently shown by their attendance that the subjects discussed were of interest to nonlawyers as well as attorneys.

There have been numerous inquiries by members of the Association and others as to the possibility of obtaining copies of various lectures. Not only for this reason, but because it was felt that the lectures contained material of great value to the practising attorney and to the student of the law, the Executive Committee of the Association has decided to make them generally available.

The present volume is the beginning of the execution of that plan and contains the lectures delivered during the season of 1920-1921. If the sale of this volume warrants the conclusion that the series of 1921-1922 and 1922-1923 might be similarly published, without financial loss to the Association, two other volumes containing those series will follow in due course.
