TUBERCULIN TEST.

At the request of the Stock Committee of the Poydras Asylum, the five cows of that institution were tested for tuberculosis. All five responded to the test and autopsic findings confirmed the existence of tuberculosis.

We present the form of record used in this test.

When the inspection of dairy cattle begins, these cards, properly filled and filed, will constitute the cow register to be kept under Ordinance 16,204, C. S.

We also show the proposed method of numbering dairy cattle; it was carried out in the private test conducted at Poydras Asylum. Aluminum ear markers and a combined cow punch and clamp are used. The ear markers are in two sections, each with a hollow stem, one slightly narrower and fitting snugly within the other. The ear is punched, the button with the larger stem slipped through from the back of the ear, the other half fitted in from the front, and the whole clamped fast, somewhat after the fashion of a "bachelor's button."

In the course of a discussion touching the advisability of creating a Milk Commission for the bacterial count of milk and the grading and certification of special milk and dairies, the startling fact was brought out that Boston, with its bacterial count, has an infant. mortality higher than that of New Orleans since 1900. chart.]

The Board took the view that the most urgent need of New Orleans and the true solution of its milk question was in the operation of Ordinance 16,204, C. S., already referred to in the present report.

As already stated, the ordinance is not enforced as yet in its entirety.
