frozen at a few feet below the surface. On the Great Table land the climate is cold and dry, and subject to very cold piercing winds.

The Soil is as various as the climate. The countries south of the Table land are very fertile In the northern plain are immense swamps and barren wastes, and the soil, even where fit, cannot be cultivated, from the extreme cold. The inhabitants live by the chase. A band of desert country, broken only by the Valley of the Euphrates, stretches right across the Continent from Arabia to the Pacific. The people of these parts wander from place to place, with their flocks and herds, in search of pasture and water, both of which are very scarce.

Name six of the principal towns in Yorkshire, and say for what each is noted.

MARY, 1553-1558.

HISTORY.

Mary was the daughter of Henry VIII. and Catherine of Arragon. She married Philip, King of Spain.

On the death of Edward VI., Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed Queen, but Mary raised an army of 30,000 men, and, in 13 days, Lady Jane, her husband, Northumberland, and Archbishop Cranmer, were lodged in the Tower. Northumberland was beheaded, and Mary ascended the throne.

The chief events of her reign were

1. Persecutions.- Mary was a Roman Catholic, and as soon as possible she restored the Roman Catholic religion. The Protestant bishops were expelled; the married clergy were commanded to put away their wives; the Romish service was restored; and the lands, formerly belonging to the Church, were given back to it. Rather than submit, many of the Reformers left the country.

In January, 1555, Hooper, Bishop of Gloucester, and three clergymen named Rogers, Saunders, and Taylor, were burnt as heretics. During the reign Archbishop Cranmer, Bishops Ridley and Latimer, and about 300 others, suffered the same fate, and many perished from torture in the prisons.

Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII. and Anne Boleyn.

The

She began her reign surrounded with difficulties. Roman Catholics regarded the Crown as belonging to Mary, Queen of Scots; the Pope and the King of France would not acknowledge her, and the whole of the bishops refused to crown her, till at length the Bishop of Carlisle was persuaded to perform the office.

The chief events of her reign related to—

1. The Reformation.-Elizabeth was a Protestant, and undid most of what Mary had done, and restored Divine service to what it had been in the reign of Edward VI. The Queen was also made head of the Church in the place of the Pope.

Many of the Reformers who left the country in Mary's reign, now returned. They thought that the services of the Church were still too Romish, and, because they professed to have purer notions on this matter than other people, they were called Puritans. They objected to the use of organs in the church, to the marriage ring, to the sign of the Cross in baptism, to kneeling at the Sacrament, and to the clergy wearing vestments.
