HISTORY.

6. Fifth Parliament (1640).—This lasted nineteen years, and is called the Long Parliament. In three weeks Laud and Strafford were committed to the Tower, and only left it again to be executed.

Friday.

Unseemly quarrels between the King and Parliament were constantly taking place, and in 1642 they came to open disagreement, and the Civil War began.

7. Civil War (1642-1649).-This was a war between the King and his Parliament. The country was divided into two parties, the Royalists and the Parliamentarians; or, Cavaliers and Roundheads. The Cavaliers were the nobility and gentry of the land, and the Roundheads were the middle and lower classes of the people. The King, Prince Rupert, and others, commanded the Royalists, and Sir Thomas Fairfax, Oliver Cromwell, and others, the Parliamentarians.

The principal battles were

1. Edge Hill, Warwickshire.

2. Chalgrove Field, Oxfordshire. The Parliamentarians were defeated in both.

MOUNTAINS, RIVERS, AND LAKES.

GEOGRAPHY.

The principal ranges of Mountains in Africa are—

The Atlas Mountains, near the western coast; the Mountains of Abyssinia, 15,000 feet high; the Kong Mountains, north of Guinea; the Mountains of the Moon, running across the Continent; the Mountains of Lupata, near the eastern coast; and the Snow Mountains, in Cape Colony.

These seem to form the Borders of an extensive Table land, of which Central Africa is supposed to consist.

The principal Rivers are

The Nile, 3,000 miles long, flowing into the Mediterranean; the Senegal and Gambia, flowing into the North Atlantic Ocean; the Niger, flowing into the Gulf of Guinea; the Zaire, Congo, and Orange Rivers, flowing into the South Atlantic Ocean; and the Zambezi, flowing into the Indian Ocean.

The chief Lakes are

Lakes Tchad, Maravi, and Dembea; and Victoria Nyanza, and Albert Nyanza, forming the sources of the Nile.

AFRICA.-CLIMATE, &c.

GLOGRAPHY.

As Africa lies for the most part in the Torrid Zone, its climate is hotter than that of any of the other continents. A great part of the soil is desert, and cultivation can only be carried on along the banks of the large rivers.

It has two seasons, the dry and the rainy; but in the desert of Sahara, and in Egypt, rain is scarcely known. Where the country is well watered, vegetation is very luxuriant, and trees of enormous size are found.

People cross the deserts in companies, called caravans, for mutual protection against robbers, and the camel is their chief beast of burden.

The coffee tree is a native of Abyssinia, and the vine, sugarcane, cotton, and date, grow in different parts.

The wild animals are very numerous, and include almost all the different species known in the old world.

THE SPRING JOURNEY.

Oh! green was the corn as I rode on my way,
And bright were the dews on the blossoms of May,
And dark was the sycamore's shade to behold,
And the oak's tender leaf was of emerald and gold.
The thrush from his holly, the lark from his cloud,
Their chorus of rapture sang jovial and loud;
From the soft vernal sky to the soft grassy ground,
There was beauty above me, beneath, and around.
The mild southern breeze brought a show'r from the hill;
And yet, though it left me all drooping and chill,

I felt a new pleasure, as onward I sped,

To gaze where the rainbow gleam'd broad over head.
Oh! such be life's journey, and such be our skill,
To lose in its blessing the sense of its ill;

Through sunshine and show'r may our progress be ev'n,
And our tears add a charm to the prospect of heav'n.
Bishop Heber.
