Perkin Warbeck.-Perkin was a Fleming, and pretended to be Richard, Duke of York, son of Edward IV., who, it was believed, was murdered by Richard III. The Duchess of Burgundy gave him great encouragement, and James IV. of Scotland gave him his relative, Lady Catherine Gordon, for his wife. Henry, however, made friends with King James, and Warbeck was obliged to leave Scotland. He went to Ireland, but shortly afterwards set sail for England, and, landing on the coast of Cornwall with 3,000 men, marched on Exeter, but failed to take it. On nearing Taunton, he deserted his army, was taken prisoner, and ended his days on the gallows. 3. Discoveries. In Henry's reign several important discoveries were made. (a.) Christopher Columbus, a native of Genoa, discovered the West Indies, and the continent of America. (b.) Sebastian Cabot, a Bristol merchant, discovered Newfoundland, and sailed down the coast of America. (c.) Vasco de Gama, a Portuguese, sailed round the Cape of Good Hope, and opened up a way to India. Wars with France: First War.--This began in 1512, with the object of driving the French out of Italy. HENRY VIII.-(continued). 2.-Domestic troubles.-Henry's first wife was Catherine of Arragon, his brother Arthur's widow, and the mother of Queen Mary. They lived together for eighteen years, when Henry took a dislike to her, and wished to put her away. The Pope, fearing to offend the Emperor of Germany, Catherine's nephew, would not sanction the divorce, but Henry, under the guidance of Thomas Cranmer, who was made Archbishop of Canterbury, divorced himself. Henry's second wife was Anne Boleyn, one of Queen Catherine's ladies. She was the mother of Queen Elizabeth. At the end of three years she was tried for some offence of which her enemies accused her, and beheaded. The day after Henry married his third wife Jane Seymour.-She was the mother of Edward VI. The Central part of Asia is covered by an immense Table land, which is bounded by some of the highest mountain ranges in the world.
