CLIMATE, SOIL, &c.

GEOGRAPHY.

Owing to its immense extent, America possesses every variety of climate, from the burning heat of the Tropics to the icy coldness of Greenland.

The temperature on the whole is colder than that in the same latitudes in the Old World; and in Canada, which is nearer the equator than London, the snow remains on the ground for several months in the year.

South America, being situated more within the Tropics, is warmer than North America, but in the extreme South it is very cold and dry. Hardly any rain falls in Peru,

The Soil is generally fertile, especially in the basins of the rivers Amazon and Mississippi.

In the plain of the Amazon is the largest forest in the world, called the Selva.

The Prairies of North America are treeless, but are covered with grass several feet high; and the Pampas of South America are alternately parched up with drought, and covered with vegetation.

Write what you know of Oliver Cromwell or Prince Rupert.

THIRTY-FIRST WEEK.

With anxious eyes I look around,
Life seems a dark and stormy sea;
Yet midst the gloom I hear a sound,
A heavenly whisper, "Come to Me."
It tells me of a place of rest,

It tells me where my soul may flee;
Oh, to the weary, faint, oppress'd,

How sweet the bidding, "Come to Me."

Tuesday.

When against sin I strive in vain,
And cannot from its yoke get free;
Sinking beneath the heavy chain,
The words arrest me, "Come to Me."
When nature shudders, loath to part
From all I love, enjoy, and see;
When a faint chill comes o'er my heart,
A sweet voice utters, "Come to Me."
O voice of mercy, voice of love,

In death's last painful agony
Support me, cheer me from above,
And gently whisper,
"Come to Me."

The verb write is singular and of the first person, because the pronoun I is singular and of the first person.

In the sentence I sings, there is no agreement of person between the Pronoun and Verb; because I is first person, and sings is third.

HISTORY.

[blocks in formation]

George I. was the son of the Elector of Hanover, and of Sophia, grand-daughter of James I. He ascended the throne by virtue of the Second Act of Settlement, passed in the reign of William III. He was quite unknown to the English before becoming their king, and could scarcely speak a word of their language.

The chief events of his reign were:

1. Mar's Rebellion (1715).-The family of James II. had many friends in England and Scotland, and they now made an attempt to place on the throne James Francis, his eldest son, and called the Old Pretender. The Earl of Mar raised an army in Scotland, and the Earl of Derwentwater did the same in England. The latter was taken prisoner at Preston, and, with about thirty others, was beheaded.

Mar was defeated at Sheriff-muir. The Pretender then joined him, but soon was obliged to withdraw to France. LEARN AND WRITE

PRODUCTIONS.

GEOGRAPHY.

The vegetable productions of America are as varied as the climate. Maize, rice, European corn, cotton, sugar, coffee, tobacco, and potatoes are among the principal.

From America we first obtained the potato, tobacco, and Indian corn; and America has received from the Old World the different kinds of corn, the coffee-tree, and the cotton-plant. Cotton and rice form the chief articles of exportation to Europe.

The wild animals of America are smaller than those of the Old World. The chief are the jaguar, puma, chinchilla, opossum, llama, tapir, and beaver.

The birds are very numerous, and are noted for their beautiful plumage. Reptiles and insects are also abundant.

Most of the domestic animals have been introduced from Europe. The wild horses and cattle are sprung from the tame animals introduced by the Spaniards.

America is very rich in minerals, nearly every kind being found there in abundance.

GEORGE I.-(continued).

HISTORY.

2. The South Sea Bubble (1720).-The South Sea Company was formed for buying up the country's debts, and advancing to the nation whatever money it required, on condition that it was granted the sole right of trade to countries in the South Seas. People of all degrees bought the Company's Shares, and invested their money as if they were all about to gain a fortune. But in a few months the scheme broke down, and numbers of families were entirely ruined.

3. The Spanish War (1718).-This was begun to compel the Spanish Government to observe the treaty of Utrecht, entered into in the reign of Anne. England, France, Austria, and Holland leagued against Spain.

In two years Spain was tired, and made peace with the allies. Admiral Byng defeated the Spanish fleet off Cape Passaro; and Spain sent an expedition of 5,000 men to Scotland, to raise that country in favour of the Pretender, but it was unsuccessful.
