GEORGE II., 1727-1760.

HISTORY.

George II. was the son of George I. He married Caroline of Anspach, and had eight children, but none succeeded him.

The first twelve years of George's reign, owing to the good management of Robert Walpole, his prime minister, were very peaceful, but the remainder was very troublous.

Its principal events were—

1. The Spanish War (1739).-This broke out because of the interference of Spain with English trade to America. Several expeditions against Spain were sent out under Anson and Vernon, but they are more remarkable for failure than success. Vernon captured Porto Bello in Central America, and Anson took several Spanish gold ships.

2. War of the Austrian Succession (1740).-Charles VI., of Austria, left his dominions to his daughter, Maria Theresa. He was scarcely dead, when Bavaria, Spain, and Saxony put in claims to her possessions. Prussia, too, made war on her, and seized Silesia; and France would not acknowledge her at all, but sent a large army to support Bavaria.

England sent an army to defend the young queen, and at Dettingen, led by George II. himself, it gave the French a severe defeat. This was the last time that an English king led his army to battle.

The war lasted eight years, and ended in the triumph of the Queen.

GEORGE II. (continued.)

HISTORY.

3. Rebellion of 1745.-While England was engaged in war on the Continent, Prince Charles, the eldest son of the Pretender, made an attempt to win the Crown for his father. He landed in Scotland with but seven attendants, and trusted to his friends to rally round him.

Upwards of 10,000 Highlanders joined him, and with these he defeated the royal troops, under Sir John Cope, at Prestonpans, He then marched into England, and had got as far as Derby, when he was obliged to return. At Falkirk, he defeated the royal troops again, but, in three months, the Duke of Cumberland completely overthrew him at the battle of Culloden. This was the last battle fought for the Stuarts.

A reward of £30,000 was offered for "Prince Charlie," but no one betrayed him. He escaped to the Continent, and died in 1788.

THE UNITED STATES.

GEOGRAPHY.

The United States occupy the central portion of North America, and extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and from the St. Lawrence to the Gulf of Mexico. Its area is nearly equal to that of Europe, and its population is about 35,000,000.

This immense district is well watered by the Mississippi, and other large rivers, and the soil, almost throughout its whole extent, is rich and fertile. The coast is indented with good harbours, well fitted for commerce.

Maize, cotton, wheat, rice, and tobacco, are produced in great abundance, and form the chief articles of export.

The manufactured goods of England, and the silk and wine of France, &c., are imported.

The country was originally colonized by the English, and maintained its connection with the mother country until the year 1783, when, after a war with England, which lasted seven years, it declared itself independent. It now consists of 47 divisions, 36 of which are States, properly so called.

FALLEN GREATNESS.

Cromwell, I did not think to shed a tear

In all my miseries, but thou hast forced me
Out of thy honest truth to play the woman.-
Let's dry our eyes; and thus far hear me, Cromwell,
And when I am forgotten, as I shall be,

And sleep in dull cold marble, where no mention
Of me must more be heard, say then I taught thee
Say Wolsey, that once rode the waves of glory,
And sounded all the depths and shoals of honour,
Found thee a way, out of his wreck, to rise in ;
A sure and safe one, though thy master missed it.
Mark but my fall, and that that ruined me.
Cromwell, I charge thee fling away ambition;
By that sin fell the angels; how can man, then,
Though th' image of his Maker, hope to win by't?
