HISTORY.

4. Indian Affairs.-The first English trading station established in India was at Surat, in the reign of James I. From this beginning grew the great East India Company, which was formed for the purpose of establishing trading stations in various parts of Hindostan, and particularly at Bombay, Madras, and Calcutta. The French, Portuguese, and Dutch also held possessions, and great rivalry existed between them. The French stations were at Pondicherry and Chandernagore.

In 1751, war broke out between the English and French. Robert Clive commanded the former, and Dupleix the latter, who were beaten at all points.

In 1756, the Rajah of Bengal attacked Calcutta, and confined 145 Englishmen and one woman in the Black Hole. By the morning all but 23 had died from suffocation. Clive retook Calcutta, and captured Chandernagore from the French. He then made war on the Rajah, and with 3,000 men, defeated his 50,000 at Plassey (1757), and placed another man on his throne. THIRTY-SIXTH WEEK.

O Thou, to whose all searching sight
The darkness shineth as the light,
Search, prove my heart, it pants for Thee,
O burst these bonds and set it free.

If in this darksome wild I stray,
Be Thou my light, be Thou my way;
No foes, no violence, I fear,

No fraud, while Thou, my God, art near.
When rising floods my soul o'erflow,
When sinks my heart in waves of woe,
Jesus, Thy timely aid impart,

And raise my head, and cheer my heart
Saviour, where'er Thy steps I see,
Dauntless, untired, I follow Thee,
O let Thy hand support me still,
And lead me to Thy holy hill.
If rough and thorny be the way,
My strength proportion to my day;
Till toil, and grief, and pain shall cease,
Where all is calm, and joy, and peace.

HISTORY.

5. The Seven Years' War (1756-1763).-This war arose from jealousy between the English and French, and from an attempt by the latter to shut out the English from trading with the North American Indians. England and Prussia leagued against Russia, Austria, and France, and carried on the war in America, India, and Europe.

Friday.

In America, the whole of Canada, which belonged to the French, was taken from them by General Wolfe, and has since belonged to England.

In India, the French influence was completely destroyed by Lord Clive and Colonel Coote.

In Europe, Admiral Hawke defeated the French fleet, and Frederic of Prussia defeated their army at Minden (1759).

The war ended by the treaty of Paris, by which France agreed to give Canada, Nova Scotia, and Cape Breton to the English.
