HISTORY.

Friday.

GEORGE III., 1760-1820.

George III. was the grandson of George II. His wife was Queen Charlotte, a German princess, who lived with him fiftyseven years, and was a very plain and sensible woman.

They had fourteen children, among whom were George, Prince of Wales, who became king; William, Duke of Clarence, who also became king; Edward, Duke of Kent, father of Queen Victoria; Ernest, Duke of Cumberland, who became king of Hanover; and Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, father of the Duke of Cambridge, and of the Princess Teck.

The reign of George III. was full of wars and tumults, and was the longest in English history, lasting nearly sixty years. For the last ten years of his reign the king suffered from insanity, and his son George, Prince of Wales, was appointed Regent.

The chief statesmen of the time were William Pitt and Charles James Fox ; and Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington were the chief warriors.

THE WEST INDIES.

GEOGRAPHY.

The WEST INDIES consist of nearly 1000 islands, lying between North and South America, the largest of which are Cuba, Hayti, Jamaica, Porto Rico, Trinidad, and Barbadoes. They are mountainous, and subject to earthquakes and hurricanes. They produce sugar, rum, coffee, cocoa, tobacco, and cotton, all of which are largely exported.

With the exception of Hayti-which is independent-the whole of these islands belong to European nations.

Cuba and Porto Rico belong to Spain; Jamaica and Trinidad to England; and the remainder to England, France, Holland, Sweden, and Denmark.

Havanna, the capital of Cuba, is the largest town, and is noted for its trade and manufacture of cigars.

Kingston and Spanish Town are the chief towns of Jamaica; St. Domingo is the capital of Hayti; San Juan of Porto Rico; and Bridgetown is the capital of Barbadoes.

Nassau is the chief town of the Bahama Islands, which produce dye-wood, and cotton.

FALLEN GREATNESS-(continued.)

Love thyself last; cherish those hearts that hate thee;
Corruption wins not more than honesty.

Still in thy right hand carry gentle peace,

To silence envious tongues. Be just, and fear not.

Let all the ends thou aim'st at be thy country's,

Thy God's and Truth's; then, if thou fall'st, O Cromwell,

Thou fall'st a blessed martyr!

Lead me in, and take an inventory of all I have,
To the last penny, 'tis the king's. My robe,
And my integrity to Heaven, is all

I dare now call my own. O Cromwell, Cromwell,
Had I but served my God with half the zeal
I served my king, he would not in mine age
Have left me naked to mine enemies!

HISTORY.

1. The American War (1755-1783).-The American colonies were founded by private individuals, as Sir Walter Raleigh, but afterwards the government took them into its own hands. The colonists were men who left England in the time of the Stuarts and Commonwealth, on account of their differences with the church and government, and carried with them rather unfriendly feelings towards England.

During "The Seven Years' War," England had assisted them with men and money against the French, and had. been put to great expense on their account, and now, it was not thought unreasonable to call upon the colonists to bear a part, of the burden, by paying a tax on their stamps, glass, paper and tea.

But they declared they would not pay the taxes, and, on three tea ships entering Boston harbour, they threw the tea, value £18,000, into the sea.

In 1755, war broke out. George Washington commanded the Americans, and, so well did he do his work, that he completely defeated the British troops, and asserted the independence of the United States. The chief battles were Lexington, Bunker's Hill, Brooklyn, Brandywine, and Stillwater, which last led to the surrender of the British troops at Saratoga.

COLUMBIA, &c.

GEOGRAPHY.

The northern part of South America is called Columbia, and consists of three independent states, Granada, Venezuela, and Ecuador.

Its surface is very varied. To the west are the loftiest peaks of the Andes, and to the east the Llanos or plains of the Orinoco, covered with immense forests, or with luxuriant vegetation, which feeds large numbers of cattle.

The principal ports are Panama, Porto Bello, and Carthagena, all in Granada.

Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is situated on the Equator, but, being 9,000 feet above the sea, it enjoys a delightful climate. Bogota is the capital of Granada, and Caraccas of Venezuela. Guiana lies to the east of Columbia, and consists of British, Dutch, and French Guiana. It exports sugar, rum, coffee, pepper, cloves, cinnamon, nutmegs, and cotton.

George Town is the capital of British Guiana; Paramaribo of Dutch; and Cayenne of French Guiana.

HISTORY.

2. The War of the French Revolution (1793-1815). The French people had for a long time been suffering from bad government. Their taxes were heavy; their nobles treated them as if they were slaves; their church had lost its hold on them; and their writers and learned men were for the most part infidels like Voltaire and Rousseau.

In 1789 they broke out into open rebellion, and behaved as if they had lost their senses. They overthrew the Government; cut off the heads of their King and Queen; upset the Church; trampled religion under foot; opened the prison doors; drenched France with blood, and declared themselves ready to fight all and everybody. The chief power was wielded by Danton, Robespierre, and Marat.

In 1793, England, Holland, Spain, Austria, and Prussia declared war against them. It waged twenty-two years, and cost England £630,000,000. During its continuance England had to fight not only against France, but against Holland, Spain, Ireland, Turkey, Denmark, and America.

Admiral Jervis defeated the Spanish fleet, and Admiral Duncan the Dutch; and Lord Nelson, at the battle of the Nile, defeated the French fleet, and at Trafalgar, the French and Spanish combined.

GEOGRAPHY.

Brazil is the largest country of South America, and occupies nearly the whole of the centre and eastern portions of the continent. It is four-fifths of the size of Europe, and is drained throughout by the Amazon and its tributaries.

The Climate is delightful, and the Soil very fertile, producing sugar, cotton, coffee, tobacco, maize, rice, and cassava.

The forest trees are important, and include Brazil-wood, Rosewood, Mahogany, and the Cocoa-nut Tree.

The country is also rich in minerals, and especially in diamonds. Gold is found in most of the river beds.

The chief towns are Rio Janeiro, Bahia, and Pernambuco. Rio Janeiro, the capital, is the largest town in South America. Its population is nearly 300,000, and it is a well built and very healthy town. It is the chief seat of the foreign trade, and exports coffee, hides, horns, dried beef, and tallow. Bahia, or San Salvador, to the north of Rio; Pernambuco, still further north; and Maranham and Para, are the other chief towns.
