GEORGE IV.-1820-1830.

HISTORY.

George IV. was the eldest son of George III., and had been Prince Regent during the last illness of his father.

He married his cousin, Caroline of Brunswick, but he behaved so badly to her, that she would not live with him, and stayed away from him for twenty-three years. When he became king, she returned to England and wished to be his queen; | but he charged her with some wicked crimes, and brought her to trial before the House of Lords. Her counsel was the late Lord Brougham, and he so ably defended her that the trial was given up, but she died shortly afterwards of grief and disappointment.

The Princess Charlotte, who married Leopold, the late King, of Belgium, was their only child.

Among the events of his reign were—

1. The Cato Street Conspiracy, which sought to bring about a revolution by murdering the king's ministers, opening the prisons, and setting fire to London. The conspirators were found in Cato Street, London, and Arthur Thistlewood, their leader, and four others were executed. LEARN AND WRITE

LA PLATA.

GEOGRAPHY.

The states of La Plata, called also the Argentine Republic, occupy the district between Brazil, Chili, Bolivia, and Pata

gonia. The country, which is about one-fifth the size of Europe, contains a number of vast treeless plains, called Pampas, which are covered with grass, and afford pasturage to immense numbers of wild cattle.

It is very thinly inhabited, the population being only about one million.

The people are engaged chiefly in hunting and cattle rearing, and they export immense quantities of hides, wool, tallow, and horns.

The chief town, Buenos Ayres, is a large and handsome city, on the La Plata, and is the third town in South America. Cordova, San Juan, and Mendoza are other important towns. Monte Video, in Uruguay, is an important port on the La Plata, and Assumption is the capital of Paraguay.

Name six of the principal towns in Russia, and say for what each is noted.

(2.) In Greece.-The Greeks had been subject to Turkey, and were now fighting for their independence. England sided with Greece. Lord Byron, too, went to her help, and died there. Greece became independent, and is now governed by King George, brother of the Princess of Wales.

3. Catholic Emancipation.-This was a movement to place the Roman Catholics on the same footing as Protestants. The severe laws passed against them in the reign of Charles II., and which kept them out of parliament and government offices, were repealed in 1828; and in 1829, through the exertions of Daniel O'Connell, they were admitted, with few exceptions, to all the rights and privileges enjoyed by Protestants. WILLIAM IV., 1830-1837.

HISTORY.

William was the fourth son of George III., and had been a sailor. His wife was Queen Adelaide, who died in 1849. His reign was short, and was remarkable for

1. The Reform Bill (1832).—When William became king great changes were going on in France and Belgium. The French once more drove their king away and chose another; and the Belgians separated themselves from Holland, formed a new kingdom, and chose Prince Leopold for their king.

Seeing these changes, the people of England also clamoured for a change, and amidst the greatest excitement, and under the leadership of Lord Russell, the Reform Bill of 1832 was passed. By it the number of persons entitled to vote for members of parliament was nearly doubled, and votes were taken from many of the old towns, and given to new ones. This bill lasted till 1867, when it was set aside for another.

2. Abolition of Slavery (1833).—One of the first acts of the reformed Parliament was to set free the slaves in the British colonies. The owners were paid £20,000,000 as compensation. The same Parliament also made a grant of £20,000 for the spread of education.

AUSTRALIA.

GEOGRAPHY.

Australia is an immense island, situated to the south-east of Asia, and contains about three millions of square miles.

It is generally termed a continent, and is bounded by the Indian Ocean on the north and west; by the Southern Ocean on the south; and by the Pacific on the east. It forms a com

pact mass of land, and has but few large bays or gulfs.
The mountains, which are not very high, are situated along
the eastern coast, and are called the Australian Alps, the Blue
Mountains, and the Liverpool Range.

It has numerous rivers, but few that bear any proportion to the size of the continent. The largest is the Murray, with its large tributaries the Darling, Lachlan, and Murrumbidgee, all in the south-east. There are also many small streams round the coast. Lake Torrens, in the south, is the only important lake.
