HENRY VIII.-(continued).

HISTORY.

3. The Reformation.-This was a great religious change in the discipline and doctrines of the Church. Martin Luther, Erasmus, Melancthon, and Zwinglius carried on the great work on the Continent, while Cranmer, Tyndal, Latimer, Ridley, and Hooper were its prime movers in England.

Henry at first opposed the change, and wrote a book in opposition to Luther, and was rewarded by the Pope with the title of "Defender of the Faith." But in 1534, being offended with the Pope, he assumed to be the Supreme Head of the English Church, and forbade the sending of Peter's pence and other payments to Rome.

Friday.

The monks complained loudly of Henry, who in return appointed Thomas Cromwell to visit their monasteries and other religious houses. The result was that 3,219 of these institutions were broken up, their inmates were expelled, and their lands and money seized. Six new bishoprics and numerous grammar-schools, hospitals, and castles were erected with the money, but much of the land was given away, or sold cheaply to the king's favourites.

The people were now allowed the free use of the Bible, and, that they might read it, a copy was ordered to be placed in every parish church.

EDWARD VI., 1547-1553.

of 61. HISTORY.

Edward was the son of Henry VIII. and Jane Seymour. He was not quite ten years old when his father died, and, till he was old enough to rule himself, a council of nobles and clergy, with his uncle, the Earl of Hertford, at the head, was appointed to rule for him.

The principal events of his reign were—

1. War with Scotland (1547).—It had been arranged while Henry VIII. was living that Edward should marry Mary, the daughter of the king of Scotland. But Edward was a Protestant, and Mary a Roman Catholic, and the feeling in Scotland was so strong against the marriage that war broke out, and the Scotch were defeated at Pinkie. Mary, however, was sent to France, where she married the French king's son, and became Queen of France.

The Great Plain of Siberia, extending from the Table land to the Arctic Ocean; the Plain of the Ganges in India; the Plain of China, including the country between the two great rivers Hoang-ho and Yang-tse-Kiang; and the Plain of the Euphrates and Tigris.

IMPORTANCE OF TRIFLES.

Since trifles make the sum of human things,
And half our misery from our foibles springs;
Since life's best joys consist in peace and ease,
And few can save, or serve, but all can please;
Oh! let the ungentle spirit learn, from hence,
A small unkindness is a great offence;
Large bounties to bestow we wish in vain,
But all may shun the guilt of giving pain.

EDWARD VI.-(continued.)

2. Insurrections.-The breaking up of the monasteries was a great blow to the poor. They had given employment to thousands, and had been the great houses of relief throughout the country. Moreover, wages at this time were low, and food was dear. There was great distress amongst the poor, and grumblings were heard far and near. Rebellions broke out in Devon and Cornwall, but especially in Norfolk, under a tanner named Ket. They were all put down with great severity.

3. The Reformation.-Edward and his council were Protestants, and promoted the Protestant religion. The first Prayer Book was compiled, and the manner of conducting Divine Service in the Churches was regulated.

4. Alteration of the Succession.-The king's health was not strong, and the Duke of Northumberland, who had become Protector, persuaded Edward to leave the throne to Lady Jane Grey, his daughter-in-law, and to set aside the claims of Edward's sisters, Mary and Elizabeth. The king died very soon afterwards of consumption.
