VICTORIA-(continued.)

HISTORY

Wars-(continued).—(3.) The Crimean War.-In 1853, Turkey declared war against Russia, and England and France determined to help her. They sent armies to the Crimea, and after the battle of the Alma, laid siege to Sebastopol. While the siege was going on, the Russians attacked them at Balaclava and Inkerman, but were defeated. In 1855, Sebastopol was taken, and peace was made.

(4.) The Abyssinian War, 1867.-This war was undertaken to compel the Emperor Theodore to release some Englishmen whom he detained in captivity. His stronghold, Magdala, was stormed, and the prisoners released by Lord Napier.

3. Home Affairs.-The reign of Victoria is remarkable for the extension of trade, and the promotion of peace. Through the exertions of Richard Cobden and others, the duties on corn, and on about 750 other articles, were repealed or reduced. Railways were made, and in 1845, no less than 120 bills for making them passed through Parliament.

In 1851, the Crystal Palace was opened, and goods from all parts of the world were exhibited, and upwards of 6,000,000 people visited it. It was followed in 1862 and in 1871 by the

International Exhibitions.

AUSTRALIA.

GEOGRAPHY.

Queensland occupies the whole of the eastern portion of Australia, north of New South Wales. It is the largest colony, and is very well watered, but rather thinly inhabited. Being situated nearer to the Equator than the colonies previously mentioned, its climate is considerably warmer than theirs, and its productions are of a more tropical character.

Cotton, coffee, tobacco, and arrowroot can be cultivated, and specimens of these products were exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1862. The chief article of export is wool. Brisbane, on the river of the same name, is the capital.

South Australia occupies the southern portion of the continent. It is an agricultural country, and obtained the prize, at the Great Exhibition, for the best wheat in the world. Adelaide, situated near the Gulf of St. Vincent, is the capital, and has about 25,000 inhabitants.

West Australia occupies the western part of the continent. It is little known, but possesses a fine climate, and is rich in minerals. The capital is Perth, on the Swan river.

NEW ZEALAND, &C.

GEOGRAPHY.

New Zealand consists of three islands, situated to the southeast of Australia. These were formerly called New Ulster, New Munster, and New Leinster, but are now known as North Island, South Island, and Stewart Island. The area of the whole is about the same as that of Great Britain.

Mount Cook, 13,000 feet high, in South Island, is the highest mountain in Australasia. The country is well watered; the soil is generally fertile, and the climate greatly resembles that of Great Britain.

It is thinly inhabited, and the towns are small. The capital is Auckland, in North Island. Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, and Dunedin are other important towns.

Tasmania, or Van Diemen's Land, is an Island lying to the south of Australia, and separated from it by Bass's Strait. It is about three-fourths of the size of Ireland, and possesses a fine climate and fertile soil. Its chief productions are wool and corn. The capital is Hobart Town, a place of considerable trade.

New Guinea, or Papua, is an island to the north of Australia.
